Default What would you pay for a paint job?

What would you pay for a complete paint job, excluding jams? Right now my car has some pretty rough black paint. the front is chipped to hell and has been previously touched up with a non matching black. the front and rear bumpers have a lot of clearcoat fading. I took it to 5 body shops in my area and these are the responses i got.
Shop 1. $5500-6000 for a complete repsray in stock color.
Shop 2. 4700-5000 for same
Shop 3. They said that was too big of a job for them. They had two cars in the shop and they were all sitting around.....
Shop 4. Recommended a good buffing/ waxing. And said they were booked for about a month. Said could be done for around $6000.
Shop 5. $5000-5500

Shop 1,2, and 5 are well known shops in my area and do very good work.

My friend just had his BMW painted candy orange, jams and all for $2000 by a guy who has his own little shop about 30 minutes away. His turn around times take longer but his work is amazing.

Could someone tell me what they paid for a complete paint job in their area? Thanks.

here is my friends BMW right after the new paint.\/

I only pad 1800$ for a full paint job, engine bay, jams, everything. Candy blue on my 240sx. I got a quote from the same guy to paint my gs desert gold for 2200$. Well...this is a major hook up price. He only works on exotic cars, but was willing to work with me.

So to answer your question.....for me.....2500 is more I will pay

Go with shop 2 and go to shop 3 and knock somebody's head in for telling you that BS. Tell shop 4 to f*** themselves for that price. I know guys that can do custom paint jobs for about what you're looking at shop 1 and 2 to get stock so you might want to shop around, where are you from? I can recommend some excellent shops in AZ, TX, and southern CA

Im in NW Iowa. I just had the guy who painted the bmw look at mine. Said he would do mine for $2000 also. He is going to leave the jams alone as i requested to save some time. Thinking of going with black on top, charcoal grey metallic on bottom

1800-2k for a paintjob.... it will be around that much alone in good materials... unless they are painting with Omni <ppg brand but cheap quality materials, Nason <Dupont's lower line...etc. I know he's not using DBU or better quality paint for that price...if he is, he's making $0 to negative $ on the paintjob. Most people don't figure the primer, sandpaper, light filler, tape, paper, acetone, hardener, reducer, clear, etc...

true. high quality materials, specially paint and the clear alone is expensive. ask what kind/brand of materials they are using. $3000-$4000 is usually an average price for a high quality paint job.

I have recieved estimates of $5k to $8k for a full color change using really good quality paints. I wouldnt expect the other paint jobs to last too long with the lower quality paint

realistically a high quality paint job that will last a long time will cost 5k, but you can lower that cost a lot by doing the stripping and prep work by yourself.

The guy who said he could do it all for $2000 uses strictly dupont paint. His dad owns a body shop supply store in town and is an authorized dealer. He said the paint is the only thing that has to be of high quality, and would be using cheaper materials in the prep work (sandpaper, scuff pads, etc.) . He also noted that he is the only person working on the car, from tear down to final buffing, so he doesnt have to pay for extra help which lowers cost.
Im going to head over to his shop this friday and check out a car he just finished. If it looks as good as my friends he did I will probably go to him.

It is expensive but that is doing it the right way, painting the jams and removing engine to paint engine bay. That gets very pricey, but it will be done right and to me its worth it

have fun with that...remember dupont makes several different lines of paint. And I never understood using the cheap sandpaper because it gets clogged fast and you end up using more sandpaper...quality materials are best
