Default 2Gen GS VS. 3Gen GS - stupid question?

I'm curious if anyone has compared the two, obviously one would think that the 3gen is better, but I'm just wondering if there is THAT much of a difference to justify spending the extra money, I've driven both and I'm trying to convince myself to just get a 2Gen and be happy, but I'm worried I'll have it for a year and want to upgrade to the 3rd gen so why not just strech the budget (alot!) and get it now. I searched and couldn't find any comparo's.

Basically I've been looking at 10-14k GS400's with 100k etc. I have about $20k cash, but I've seen a few '06's go for low 30s. So I could take out a loan for the rest, but it would really be tight as I already have another car loan. I LOVE the 3rd gen body style, and the reports I've read is that the GS350 gets pretty good gas mpg compared to the older GS400's. I dunno maybe 23 vs. 17-20 for the gs400. The 3rd gen seemed to handle better as well. Just wondering if someone has upgraded with first hand knowledge.

It all depends on your future mods, speed or looks? All combined together. As for looks AND speed. I love the 2gs. But then again, it's your taste. If you already have a car loan, and plan to buy a house in the near future or buy something big, then I will stay away from another loan. But if you're still young and willing to sacrifice saving money then you should.

couple of 06 for low 30s, i bet they are gs300. if they are gs430 or gs350, those cars must be in very bad shape for that price range

the gs350 has very good gas mileage of 21/29. the gs400 was rated 18/23, but that's with the old SAE rating. with the new rating it would be much worse, probably something like 15/20 or so. it eats a lot of gas compared to the newer cars like gs350, which is a lot faster as well (much faster than the gs400)

handling wise i think they are about the same, unless you get the gs450h or the gs430/460 which has the **** option. but those cars are way out of your price range.

for about 20k i guess you are looking for 2000 or 2001 gs400/430, it's a good car, but i can say it's getting old too

+1 with the key word = afford

You spending 30k on a 06 Lexus means spending more $$ to find out how they ended up at that price.

A car is known to be one of the worst vehicles of investment (no pun intended). First of all, is the other car loan your car or your wifes? If your already paying off a loan for your car now, why would you put yourself further in debt? I say put your 20K in the bank. If the other car loan is for your wife or not for yourself, I would say sit around and wait for a killer deal on a clean, low mileage 01-05 GS400/GS430.

From what you posted, it seems like your pockets aren't lined with dough. Keep yourself out of debt first and foremost.

I bought my current GS 400 from my mom who bought the a new GS 350. The interior is nicer. Very nice. However I did race my mom and her car was quite a bit slower. Still quick but not as quick as the 400. Probably because it weights alot more. So really depends on what you want. Luxury the new Gen3 performance Gen2

"it weights alot more"? please, where did you get that from? curb weight of gs400 is 3690lb, curb weight of gs350 is 3704lb, where's a lot?

and have you and your mom tried to switch cars and race? if not then your results aren't even accurate. from what i have read and experienced, the gs350 is faster than the gs400. maybe not a lot, but faster. and i have been a gs400 owners for yrs.

Thanks for the response, yes you are correct my pockets aren't lined with dough. hehe. I already own a house with the wife, the other car loan is for a decent amount on my '03 Z06 Corvette, so I guess it wouldn't make much sense to take out another loan. She is getting a car with no debt, but has student loans payment that are way more than a car payment. So I guess the GS400 /430 is my best bet. I'm just trying to convince myself the gas mpg won't be that bad since I drive 50% highway, hell I get 20mpg with the Vette and it's 400hp! .hmmmm...

my two sense. The 3 gen is a better all around car then the 2nd, but it does not have to ptential to be as good as the 2nd can be. At least not yet. Save the cash and put it towards your upgrades and when it is all said and done you will have a car that is better than the 3rd gen. As for the gs400 being faster than the GS350; your mom was not hitting the gas pedel quite as hard as you were. 0-60 is 5.7 on the 350 and 6.0 on the 400.

Well with a combination of debt including your mortgage, your Z06 car loan (nice car ), and your wife's student loans, that would seal the deal for me. I would save the 20K for a rainy day. BUT, if you seriously have the itch for a GS and your willing to sacrifice, a 2GS 400/430 is the way to go for you. A 3GS would be out of the question. With your concern about gas mileage, the beautiful thing about the GS4XX, is that the lower gear ratio and the fact that it only weighs a bit more than the GS3, you will only be getting 2-3 mpg less than a GS300. Oh yea and 75 more ponies....

Curb weight for the 350 is 3869 just looked it up, you were right on the 400. What I am sure of is the top end of the 350 doesnt pull nearly as hard. I have driven her car, I can feel the difference. Even she says it doesnt feel nearly as fast and she has been driving it for years. And the race was actually my brother who is 15 with a permit with myself in the car (i was drunk) against my mom. Neither of them know what they are doing except mashing the peddal to the ground. So maybe the race wasnt up to your standards. The 400 to me was significantly faster. All I know is I think the 400 is faster, she thinks the 400 is faster, and from the race i saw the 400 was faster.
