Default 20K mi Service

My wife's 04 GS300 is getting close to 20K miles. Do I have to take her to the stealership for service?

Not necessarily, find out what things are done for that mileage maintenance service and either take it to a mechanic you trust or diy.

The owners manual suggests:

Replace engine oil and oil filter
Replace air conditioner filter
Re- Torque drive shaft flange (I can do all except this one)
Visually inspect brake pads
Rotate tires

even if you do take it a dealer, its pretty cheap. the 60k or 90k is where it gets uglier

I work for a Lexus dealership and i can vouch for this statement, but any repair facility can do the same work as the dealership. Only when warranty repairs are called into question will you need to provide proof that the services were done to Lexus requirements.

The LEXUS dealership is too far away but there is a big TOYOTA dealership about 2 miles away. Since the GS300 is like the AVALON, is it ok to take it the Toyota dealer instead?

Shares nothing with the avalon. One is a front wheel drive platform, the other is a rear wheel drive. The only Lexus that really shares a lot of parts with a Toyota counterpart is the ES series.

Yea, you can take the GS to a toyota shop. The only area where you will run into problems is doing warranty repairs. Good thing about Toyota and Lexus is they share the same dealer network for service, warranty, and body shop repairs. Lexus, unfortunatly, will not pay a Toyota shop for warranty repairs done to a Luxus when there is a Lexus shop in the area.
