At night, the older taillights make the car look...well, "older". Because at night, you can't see the cleared out tails, so all you see is what "lights up".
So, the cleared out 98-00 tails look good in the daylight, because you can see the definitive cleared out taillights....but at night, all an enthusiast will see is an older looking taillight, which simply makes the car look dated.
