I average about 18-19 with city and hwy mix and I am not easy on the pedal.

'02 GS430 / 400 mile round trip hwy excursion this past summer:

* averaged 25mpg at ~75mph w/cruise engaged and a/c on; a few +85mph bursts
* averaged an even better 27mpg at ~75mph w/cruise engaged on the return trip; a/c off and on; paid a lot of attention to maintaining my mpg saving momentum; probably only half as many bursts beyond 85mph

Otherwise, I'm getting ~19mpg. It'll be +21mpg on Friday after driving back and forth from work on the fwy all week, but the weekend drives the average down to 19mpg by Sunday night.

And being able to service major intervals @ toyota dealers is a +; although I'll probably do everything myself minus the timing belt/WP.

The only Honda I'd look at is a TSX and its over my range..I'm steering clear away of the 00-02 TL's as that transmission was a design failure.
++++1

I had serveral oportunities to by BMWs or Acura TLs but stayed away due to all of the problems. Its too bad the TL had tranny problems, I think it would have been a good fit for my family.
I bought a 1999 GS300 in August and the gas mileage is not great. I've gotten 23mpg with 70% hwy driving. The car just drives fantastic however. Fit and finish is top notch also. If you can swing a GS400 then go for it. I would have bought one too but I bought the car for my wife. She isnt concerned with extra power.

Good Luck with your next purchase,
Gears

Ya, my old glorified Honda (Acura) Vigor only got 26 mpg too. I think the MPG issue with my GS300 and my old Vigor is gearing. My GS300 cruises the highway at around 3,000 rpm. To those who don't know, that is very high. When I first drove the car I thought something was wrong with the transmission. As a comparison, I had a 1998 Formula (LS1 5.7L) Firebird and it would get (up to) 27.5 mpg on a mostly highway trip. This car was an automatic too. It did have a 2.73 gear in the car and would loaf at 1600 rpm on the highway. Our GS300s have a 3.92 gear I believe? All my other current vehicles cruise at 2,200 to 2,600 rpm.

I hope this helps,
Gears

The people who claim to get 25-26 MPG with the 8 cylinder are wishfully measuring, Lexus doesnt even claim that with the extra lenient EPA tests they were doing back then...

Go to the Gas Mileage thread, and look at what the average driver gets there, thats far more accurate than listening to a few glowing claims.

I get about 20MPG with my GS300, 50% highway/50% city

I don't see how filling up your car, reseting the trip meter and getting on the highway is wishfully measuring. I easily get 500 miles out of a tank on the highway. That figure drops down to around 400 miles when combining city and highway driving.

Yup. I get about 25-26mpg on the highway. 13-14mpg in the city though

I fill up my tank all the way full, run it down until the light turns on, fill up the gas and take the mileage and divided by the amount i filled up by. No guessing here

THe normally aspirated 3-Series and 5 series are reliable and Consumer Reports thinks they are simply fantastic cars. I had a subscription until recently, and BMW was one of the few cars CR gloated over as the best car as a total experience. Yes maintenance is more than Lexus, and theres a few more lemons on the market ...but most BMW enthusiasts put up with the landscape.

You gotta own one once or twice in your life.

LOL that said, i was in the mood for the king of the Highway ... Lexus.

If I can convince my parents I'd be more than happy with an E46 330ci; I'd do all the work on it...There's only one weak point in the entire car (window regulators)..
And the S54 Engine has a Timing chain

I get 22mpg regulary in my GS400 with an average speed of 42mph, so it's about 60 hwy/40 city. It is a great cruiser, and with mods I feel it's close to the BMW in handling, while maintaining comfy cruiser status on the hwy.
