GS400 vs GS300 (Gas Mileage...I've searched/read) its for my father

Speaking from the position of a Lexus employee and fellow GS owner who has has recently owned 2 GS400's (1998 and 1999 models) and now a 2002 GS300 Sport Design, I can definitely say the GS3 substantially outperforms the GS4 in fuel economy. Its wishful thinking to believe the GS4 will get 26-27mpg on the highway, I have never gotten better then 24 on long road trips, and usually averaged about 18-19mpg with a 50/50 city highway mix. I would definitely question the measuring process of those making such claims that the GS4 will out perform the GS3, as the G4 only has better gearing to substantiate that claim. I have averaged about 22mpg in the same driving day to day in the 300, in comparison to 18-19 in the 400. Its really all about taste, the G4 is a blast to drive, but the G3 is more practical. The choice is yours.

Again, how can it be wishful thinking if you reset your trip meter after filling up and get in excess of 500 miles out of a tank?

THe normally aspirated 3-Series and 5 series are reliable and Consumer Reports thinks they are simply fantastic cars. I had a subscription until recently, and BMW was one of the few cars CR gloated over as the best car as a total experience. Yes maintenance is more than Lexus...
as far as the gas mileage for the GS3/4; gas mileage is not an exact science. there are far too many variables to account for (weather, tire pressure, condition of injectors, traffic, avg. speed, etc.) so the old rule of "mileage may vary" is probably important to keep in mind.
these are great cars so you won't go wrong with either the 300 or 400 IMO.

Big memory,
I agree that BMW's are extraordinary cars. When I was shopping for my wifes car they had a red E36 BMW for sale very close to my house. I had to pass that thing every time I went to town. That car was gorgeous. I went to look at it twice and I even researched the car hoping that their reputation was false. It just so happened (lucky me) that Bimmer magazine did a 3 series market update in their May 2007 issue right when I was shopping around. In that issue they discussed used car prices, models as well as maladies for each model. After thoroughly studing the article and hearing about certain issues on some models I decided to look for something else. I will say that if the car had been for weekend driving it would be mine right now. But since this was going to be a daily driver and since we were truly spoiled from our last car (a 4th gen Maxima) I had to pass.
But like you say you have to try one once,

Don't worry man. Just slap a turbo on your car and it will be a real beast. Much easier/cheaper to boost a GS3 than the V8. You do know the GS300 has the legendary Toyota 2JZ motor(famous from the Supra Turbo 93-98). When I was running the stock engine/tranny with a turbo... I could keep neck in neck with a C6 Corvette on the highway. Just don't expect your gas mileage to stay the same though
Oh...warranty will be out the window if you turbo the car though. Personally I could care less. My car is a 2005 and the warranty was void when the car had 15k miles. Now at 20k ish miles, I'm already installing a new race built engine into the car lol.

A subject I can actually contribute too...
Just got back from a long road trip in my 02 GS430 and kept track of the mileage the whole time. While out in CA, I did a fair amount of stop and go city driving, so I would say this number is 80/20 highway/city:
24.067 MPG
Now there were a few times where I got 27-28MPG (still not sure how really it was either terrain or the quality of the gas) and a few places were the highway average curved down to about 22-23 MPG. All in all though, I can safely say my GS430 running at an average of 75MPH gets 24-25MPG
Honestly, I am happy with that number. It's above the advertised mileage, I haven't done a systematic cleaning of the fuel/air system yet and WTH - its a V8
