Is timing belt change really necessary?

6 years or 90k miles in the owners manual. i have a 98 and did mine when i had 63k miles on it last year.
why don't you take the cover off and inspect the timing belt. Should take you about 5 mins to do.

I had a 2000 VW Beetle, and the impeller on those water pumps were made of PLASTIC and would melt if the car got warm. I would still change the water pump when doing the timing belt on either the GS3 or GS4. Use the RED Toyota coolant and it will look like new when it comes off.

you should change the belt every 6yrs/ 90k. just because the belt you took off looks alright, its probably not. by the 90 rolls around they are streched and after streching comes braking.
