How much ATF do i need for drain and refill?
#16
ok so let me sum it up. 2 qts for drain and refil. but get 3-4 just to make sure. after drain and refill, start the engine. shift from p to d1 with 5 sec in between. then drive around for 15 mins. check the dip stick to max hot. to see the level.
am i right? thank you so much guys for your help!!

Yes. Once your car is hot enough, use the HOT level, not the cold level.
Before you drive around for 15 minutes or so, check the dip stick to see if you're within the hot region, otherwise you wont be able to drive without slipping. Once you do that, drive around for 15 minutes and then check the dipstick again.

I just did a drain/refill.
I measured ~2 qt drained and refilled the same amount (to avoid the issues associated with the dipstick after refilling).
Miles when purchased: 30,000.
Current miles: 104,000.
The fluid appeared to be in excellent shape, a murky purple.
FYI, my dad ran his 1990 LS 400 to 330,000 miles without changing the transmission fluid and never had any problems or noticed any issues. He has done two drains/refills since then per my suggestion, but I don't think he's noticed any effects.

I bought my Tundra new and have drained all the fluids (Antifreeze, rear-end tranny, power steering engine oil (3k)) and refilled every 10K. The fluid comes out just as clean as I put it in. Crazy I know. I do this with all my cars. I know that it increases the cost of ownership but, I do it myself and I know it cant be bad.
I bought my GS400 with 75 K on it and the trans was never touched. I have drained and refilled now 5 times. I have actually noticed that the fluid that I have been draining out is getting dirtier a bit subjective I know. I do not do a Hunter check on it or anything just my poor eye when I drain it out. I will continue do to this until it comes out CLEAN.
I drain and refill 3 quarts of Toyota fluid.
I have drained the rear end in the GS once and it came out VERY clean. I always replace the plug gasket with a Toyota gasket
sorry to rant

I might be but, it is right at the top of the full mark on the dipstick.
The first time that I did it I drained it and then filled empty oil bottles until I had none left in the drain pan. It had 4 qts in it.
IF you had to pick the worst of the two evils isn't it better to overfill then under?

After looking at several transmission slipping threads...this one seems to be similar to my problem.
I had our Lexus dealer do a transmission flush on our 02 GS430. Ever since then the transmission seems to slip on occasion in the first couple gears when starting out. The car never did this before the flush. Is this just a coincidence, or is it most likely they filled it back up to low? Any other ideas of what may cause the transmission to slip in the first couple gears? Thanks in advance.

I've had the same problem as you on my last car after I had the transmission flushed.
It is not recommended to flush your transmission if you do not already do it on a regular basis since new. It frees up all the metal shavings.
A drain and refill is the preferred method. Bananags had a chart showing how 20 qtrs and 10 drain and refills are needed to get the old ATF fluid down to 8.1%. Check it out http://bananags.grantham-internation...il/index1.html
So yes, a common factor I've noticed is after a flush on an unmaintained transmission most of the time results in tranny slippage.

I have owned the car since it had only 15,000 miles. I have meticulously maintained the car for the past several years since buying it. The car by no means has been improperly maintained as I am a stickler for genuine OEM parts/maintance at the dealer, oil changes every 3000 miles and only premium gas. After taking it to the dealer today, it ended up being nothing more than 1/2 quart shy on the ATF fluid. Simple enough fix. Now it runs perfect. So glad it was nothing major!
