Two things,
You can ask Aliga if he has a used GS tranny..since he gets a lot of Lexus parts and is in NYC.
In addition to that, I can refer you to the guy who installed my tranny...to do the labor...
I think that would total your cost well under 2k.
PM Aliga about the tranny first...

Thanks man, I'll hit him up, and hit you back for that guy.
By the way does it matter if my 99 has the tricktronic shifter. Didn't 2000 and above GS's got rid of this feature. Is it the same tranny or is a different one between 1998 -1999. I could be wrong, but let me know so I don't get the wrong one. Are the trannies interchangable between 1998-2005 is a better way of wording my question.
Thanks

I had that problem with my car and it turned out all it was was the MAF. I would drive it and it took it awhile to get in to first gear. It would just stall for a few minutes and finally go. Of course the mechanics would tell me millions of things. I started off by changing my O sensors and then my Maf. Once I did that the car worked fine.

Thanks man, I'm just gonna do research on a used one. The stealer is rapeing with their price and I heard a rebuild is asking for trouble. I work up the block so I really don't need the car right now, for 3000 I can buy a decent run around car to hold me. I'm just sceptical on what state the used tranny could be in. I could be buying a burnt out joint also. This is really annoying!!!

I don't want to talk out of turn here because I haven't run into this one yet, but it seems like if the tranny works fine mechanically when the sensor light is off, then it has to be something that sets off that sensor which puts it in a weird mode. You should probably talk to a tranny specialist like DJ Tantra's buddy before you do anything else.

The way I look at it man..
Tranny problems are one of the worst...
1. dealer simply says replace.
2. tranny shop simply says rebuild.
Usually places don't want to deal with these kind of issues...You need to try to go to transmission shops that are trustworthy...and that will give it a test drive and examine what the problem might be...but it's still risky with the trannys..that is why every1 just perfers switching them out....

I have seen issues with the shift solenoids before. There was a post that showed the solenoids and what they shifted for. I am stupid so I don't remember where maybe it is just drunk. I would personally change each of the shift solenoids MYSELF before I surrendered to a new or junk yard trans. I would not let the dealer rebuild. You need to think of the dealer as a parts changer. They do not have the desire to rebuild or ADD VALUE to your experience at a dealer. That is how the shade-tree backyard mechanic adds value. Just my two cents. Imagine what my thread will look like when I have a DIY on trans issues. Just look at my door lock actuator DIY.... Ha ha ha

LOL the update is a have put 27,000 miles on the car in 4 years that I owned it. After the stealer issue, I just left that car park in from of the crib. My uncle said he has a repitable tranny guy in brooklyn but we will see. But thanks man this car issue has been the last thing on my mind as of late. I get back to ya. By the way Happy holidays to all! Thanks for all the valuable info throughout the year.
