GS 300/400 Gas mileage?

Pole Position
After I switched to Shell Optimax (which is 98 or 99 RON), then I'm getting the equivalent around 21/22mpg (17mpg in US gallons) on my daily commuteThat seems real low to me. The air filter has been changed, the engine has just been serviced, the plugs were done 30k ago, the tyres are at the right pressure. I even add STP fuel system cleaner to it.
I think it's because I've got 245/40 on 18s, and so the rolling resistance is much higher than the stock skinnier tyres.

After the K&N drop in filter and L-tuned exhaust, I took a pretty long trip (160 miles total). It was 95% highway driving, I did 80 mph with the AC on the whole way. I averaged 25.6 m/gal. During the week, I drive 60 miles per day on the highway with traffict 50% of the time and average 22.5 m/gal. I guess those exhausts help.

My commute is 6 miles one way in stop and go traffic and I go home for lunch so 90% of my driving is in the city and I am averaging 21 mpg since we got off the winter gas and I have averaged 20.5 mpg since I bought my 99GS400 last July. I use Costco premium and add 1oz of Fuel Power for every 5 gallons when I fill up. I also have HKS exhaust. After 1 year I am thrilled with my car and the gas mileage.

Tested today my 2003 GS300 w/34K miles.
Filled to top.
Drove 183.5 miles.
Refill with 9.665 Gallons.
The math 183.5 /9.665=18.98 miles p/gallon.
I say 19 miles mostly city driving around 40 to 60MPH
( 95%), Highway (5%)never exceed 80MPH.
Used a mix of equal parts of 93 and 89 octane Chevron gasoline
And the most important part ,with AC on all the time.
I would like a little more but it is city driving nothing i can do about the occasional traffic jams.

I've read a good bit through this thread and it seems to me that both the GS300 and GS430 both post similar gas mileage numbers, despite the 80HP difference. To me, it seems like the 1-2MPG less is worth 80 extra horsepower in the 430.
Would you guys agree? Do any 430 owners wish they had the 300 for gas mileage, or do any 300 owners wish they had opted for the 430 and taken the slight hit?
