My GS4 gets about 15 to 22 depending on if I'm on the freeway most of the time or not.

I live in Houston and get 19 - 20 around town, alot of stop and go driving. I have not been on a road trip, but have driven 2500 miles since I purchased the car. One other thing, I only use 87 octane, car runs and feels the same regardless of octane grade.

What Octane is everyone running?

I was under the assumption that everyone was running AT LEAST 91. But I bet MOST are running 93 (including myself).

XYZ, I think you're one of the first person that I've heard putting in 87 into the GS. Does it ping under hard acceleration?

Last year I did the experiment of running various grades of gasoline on a 2,500 trip. Milage and performance dropped accordingly to the grade of gas used in my LS. Premium at best was 28 MPG, mid 23-24 regular 20-21MPG. YMMV as they say.

Default 17-19

I get 17 - 19 in my 4.0L GS400. Mostly moderate combination of stop & go highway and city driving.

By chance, what octane is everyone running. I have been using Premium 92 since I bought mine...anyone put Plus 91 regularly?

at +-$2.50 per gallon of 92, OUCH for reals

Sorry for the delay, but I have never heard a ping or felt a difference. I have not registered a difference in mileage between the grades. I am getting 19 to 20 consistently with the 87 octane. I save $3.20 / week from the 93 Octane.

IMHO, I don't think it's worth saving $150/year by running 87. I PERSONALLY would fork out that extra $150/year just to have the peace of mind. Saving money is good, but saving money this way......by putting regular in your car when the manufacturer recommends premium MAY hurt you in the future which may cost A LOT more than $150 to fix.

But hey, if you don't ping when you drive hard or when you have a heavy load, I guess the car somehow changes the timing or something to accommodate it.

Just my $.02

I finally remembered my password. I have the 3.0 liter, 2001 GS. The GS engines are equipped with two knock sensors, if the any vibration is detected the knock sensor retard the timing eliminating any "ping". I have never heard any pinging or obtained better gas mileage by using a higher grade such as 89 or 94. At the station the other day I saw a guy putting 87 octane into his BMW 765?, it still had paper tags, He saw I was also using 87 and laughed. I asked if he experienced any difference and he said not one.

I realize $3.20 is not alot of money but why give it away?

I don't think it does....but someone mentioned earlier that it does. Maybe on 430s? I have a 400.
