High RPM's at cold startup?

I just got a '01 GS430 so, some beginner questions to come...
I noticed today that when I started it up, the motor ran at about 1300 rpm for about 3-4 minutes then went down to 800 rpm's. It was 35 degrees out and I'm assuming this is a normal startup procedure to warm the motor up. Is this normal?
Thanks,
Todd

Yes,
Cold weather requires a little bit of reservation. I don't normally think that cars need a prolonged warm-up, as I start-up and drive slowly and carefully until it starts to warm up.
Even in warm weather the car will have a high idle upon initial startup. In hot weather it shouldn't take 3 or 4 minutes to drop the idle down, but you will see high rpm at first. Normally it is a waste of gas to allow the car to fully warm up before driving.
I was in Seattle last week and it was about 32 degrees. My rental car was reluctant to start at that weather, but it finally did.
Just take it slow and don't hotrod the engine until it warms up.
