Default The Tired & True Dilemma -2000 GS3 vs 99 GS4

Hi Guys,

First off, this site has been a fantastic resource. Thanks!

I have been looking for a 2nd gen GS for about three weeks now in Cali. Initially had a budget of 10K. LOL Have decided to get a quality car will need to up that some. I am currently looking at a family owned 2000 GS3 87,000 miles for about $12.5K (90K service not done/needs brakes but has maint. history.) and a 1999 GS4 with 96K for 12.5, no records. Both are in good shape. I would love the power of the GS4, but also like the idea of a family cared for Lex. What would you guys find more of a "wise" deal. if both were around $12K? Also, I am in no rush to buy and may continue to spend some time and see what is out there.

Thanks so much!

Also: I am a huge DIY guy and already have a Sunday/Track speed machicne so, the V8 is not mandatory, but I "like"

GS4, especially if it already had the 90k service.

If you have plans for power upgrade later, then the GS300 all the way. Turbo is nice!

Thanks PLex. No intention of going turbo. A little beyond my DIY capabilities or desire. BTW, Gsteg, you provide some amazing resources on mechanics and these cars, etc. in those 6,000+ posts. Thanks!

Thanks I really appreciate it!

If there is no plan for upgrades, then the GS400 is probably your best bet. You gain more power per NA mod than the GS300 anyways.

The only thing that's weary is the no service history on the GS4. Timing belt should be your biggest worry, but I guess you can pull the timing belt cover off to inspect the belt. Make your best judgment as to whether the belt needs to be replaced or not. But then again, the GS300 needs a 90k mile service anyways. Just hope the GS4 doesn't need one!

I think $12.5k is a pretty good deal for a GS4. It's not everyday when you see lower mileage GS priced that low. I bought my 1999 GS with 126k miles for $13.5k 2 years back, and I thought that was a great deal already.

i would go with the 3 simply because of the history, especially if you already have your speed fix someplace else

I'd still look around. There are enough out there and since you are not in a huge rush, I know you can find the right car with a history and low miles. I'd go with the GS4, I have had mine now for a few months and the power is very nice!!

I went through the same dilema about six months ago. I finally bought a GS4 in July and am I ever glad I did. My regular driver at the time was a Cressida which is about as close as you will get to a GS300 in terms of performance. I liked driving the Cress but once you drive an eight banger the six will feel real slow. If you buy the GS300 stay away from the GS4's cause you'll be kicking yourself for settling on just a six banger. BTW I also have a muscle car V8 power but the Lexus V8 is some much more refined and relaxing to drive. Very enjoyable

Get the GS400 assuming you or a mechanic can check it out beforehand.

Either way check the following:

Things that may have been replaced:
1) starter
2) lower ball joints
3) timing belt

Difference makers for me:
1) HID headlights
2) condition of tires and brakes
3) body damage

Good luck

Great input from all of you. Thank you! I definitely think I am going to take my time. So hard when one wants to jump! The GS4 w/96K did not have the 90K service ($1,600, wow!), so I proposed he split the cost with me as a deduction. We'll see. Apprecaite all the stories and hints. Very helpful. And ya, I think at this point, knowing it is more a waiting matter than that much of a price differential, gas and insurrance are about the same (at least until my daughter hits 16!) I would regret not hanging back for the right GS4.

You'll do well to take your time. I actually searched for well over a year before I bought mine. I am quite satisfied that I got a good car at a reasonably good price and it also came with a complete service history.

i know someone just sold a 98 gs400 with 19's, exhaust, stb, intake for 13.5k with 105k miles. keep looking, i'm sure u'll find one well kept for less than 12k.
