Any ex subaru owners here? (wrx sti etc) manual cars
I'm thinking about making the move from a wrx to a gs400. Anyone do the same? I'm getting tired of the rough ride and the boy racer attention i've been getting. At this point i just want a reliable car thats comfortable and not jarring. One thing that i'm concerned about is the auto trans, i've been driving stick only for about 5 years and i'm afraid i'll miss it along with the awd. Anyone have any regrets? hopefully i'll be in a gs4 soon!

i'm an ex manual car owner of 7 yrs. as for regret, i do miss the thrill of changing gears and such. my cars wasnt fast as sti, but it sure was fun to drive. lets just say i was never satisfy w/ any other auto cars i drove, but i'm pretty much happy w/ the gs430. the power is there, so it wont be too bad. good luck w/ everything. you will prob miss the 5/6 spd, but the luxury of the gs will replace that at ease

ex-Scooby owner here. Love the GS but probably will add a 2.5RS or WRX to my stable in a year or so.
As long as youre not in the mountains of Colorado or Canada, you should be alright w/o AWD. And yeah, you'll probably miss the clutch pedal. Have you thought about an manual IS300?

Not an Ex Driver but rather an occasional one. The wife enjoys the WRX daily nowadays. I still take it out when I feel like having some fun or i am running low on gas in the Lexus . But i would not give up my GS430 for its wind noise and rough ride on a daily basis.

thanks for the input, this seems like a nice forum. I think i won't miss the manual too much since i find myself actually ENJOYING auto when i do get to drive it, the luxury of a gs400 will just add to that. I'm averaging about 250 (if i'm lucky) city/highway driving and its a 13 gallon tank so its amazing to me that the gs4 isn't much different.
I've considered the is300 also since my friend has one but the gs400 just looks so damn comfortable. I just want to cruise on the highway in style and comfort.

Subaru's are over rated. They're becoming the next Civic, they're pretty much a Civic with AWD and turbo.
I owned 2, a 2002 WRX which I converted to a full JDM STI back in 2004 and recently in 2006 to 2007 I drove a 2000 RSTI which I also built out of spare parts.
Honestly if you want a more sophisticated car and not the bad attention from cops than I would recommend something more non-boy racer.
Since you're in CA there really isn't any point in owning a AWD, it barely rains and snow in CA. However if you're in WA like myself the AWD makes driving more stable in the rain and the occasional snow.
If you want a car to build as a project or a track car, I would suggest sometihng like an older Subaru L since they're pretty cheap in the $500-$3000 range and/or 240sx's.

lol, talking about something being the next civic, how about the 240sx! those things are more attention getting than a wrx anyway, being a coupe vs. a 4 door.

I had an 04 Wrx with accessport and HKs Hipermax II coilovers. It was ok, a lot smaller inside than the Gs, none of the nice features of the Gs. Always felt the interior of the Wrx cheap, low in quality. I drive across country twice a year and the Gs was quite a bit more comfortable, less noise, better riding even on Tein Coilovers, more space etc etc...it's really a different type of car. I don't regret the change.
