Default GS400 Overheating question

I have a 2000 GS4 w/ 122k miles. After sitting at idle for several minutes this afternoon I noticed the temp guage almost pegged I didn't hear the fans running though. I began to drive and after less than 1/2 mile it cooled back down. I let it sit and idle again and could hear the fans kick on for 5-10 second intervals. After a few minutes the fans didn't come on and it began to heat up. After another minute or two the fans did come back on and run for a longer time and it cooled back down to normal. I believe this is going to be a temp sensor issue. But I'm not sure where it's located and how big of a headache it's going to be for a DYI. Any help would be appreciated.

More than likely two things.
1. Make sure all your caps/hoses are tight.
2. Your thermostat is probably bad.

You can DIY the thermostat, I think its like $50. I got a TRD one for about $75, its a better one that OEM.

1SICKLEX, would the cap or t-stat being bad cause the fans not to come on at the right time? Thanks
