Default mechanical noise coming from dashboard

first post on cl...
i just picked up a 98 gs300 and i noticed a mechanical sounding noise coming from behind the steering wheel. it sounds almost as if the cd changer is changing discs but it is almost constant. the noise is very low but i am wondering if anyone else has had problems with noises coming from this area. i dont think that its coming from rubbing it sounds like a motor or pump of some sort.thanks!

i did search the forum but i could not find any threads describing the same noise that i had....i opened the hood up but the sound is only audible from inside the car... it is coming from somewhere behind or under the steering wheel...any suggestions?

The noise your hearing is the brake fluid actuator engaging! Thgat's normal for the GS to do this upon starting.

THANKS so much wringo for putting my mind at ease....is it normal for the actuator to continue to make noise even while the car is moving..it pretty much happens everytime the car is not in motion.

Mine only sounds after I step on the brakes and let go. I also read somewhere that the actuator is part of the ABS?

Does it do it with the ac on only? could this possibly be the AC servo's (sp)

I have seen on here and experienced this same noise coming from behind the dash - When i turn the ac off the noise goes away .

Join the club - the CL club, and the noisy AC servo club, which is what I think you have. Does the noise get worse when you play with your temp controls? Does it go away when you turn off all AC/heating?

If so, there's your culprit. There are some threads here on this topic.
