The 90K interval for timing belt change has a lot of wiggle room built in. I had a long talk with a knowledgeable Lexus tech, he said the belts he changes usually don't show any signs of wear or cracking but they are still worn out and not to be trusted.
The idea of pushing the miles makes no sense; the risks simply are not worth it. Depending on what the engine is doing when the belt breaks, damage can be a few bent valves to a completely exploded engine. I have seen this happen on other engines and I am always amazed at the utter destruction. Spend the $800 now or risk having to spend a lot more later. Was it the Fram commercial where the guy said “Pay me now, or pay me later?”
