Default Detailer to clean headlights?

Hey guys,

I haven't been on here in a while but I remember some phone number and website going around for a guy who cleans headlights (sands them down and whatever else was involved). It was something like $50/pair. Does anybody have his number/site? My car has been sitting in the sun and its developing that yellowish fog on the lights.

Thanks for the help.

go to walmart and buy auto sand paper, 600 grade, then 2000 grade. use the 600 first, sand it down with water, then buff it with the 2000 grade. buy PlastX plastic polish. swirl it on for 5 minutes. let it sit for 3 min, then use a wax buffer pad in a circular motion to wipe it off. i did it to my old solara and they looked brand new. if you do it this way you can re-do it anytime you feel like. GOOD LUCK!

See I've never done this before so I don't know the small details, thats why I just asked for a number. I'm talking about things like what motion do you use with the 600 grade? what motion with the 2000 grade? Do you wipe down the lights with water first? How often do you reaply water while sanding? Should the lights still be wet while using the 2000 grade also?

Anytime you are using 600 grit or finer, you need a steady stream of water. The fine paper will load up very quickly, the water keeps it clean. I was told to soak new 2000 grit paper in a jar of water for a day before using it.

Use car wash soap + water as lubricant. you'll want to go in a back and forth motion. No swirling at all.

Take a look at this thread:

If your headlights are rough, then wetsanding is a good idea. However, if it's smooth but has yellow on it, you can just buff it out withotu resorting to wetsanding.

clean the lights thoroughly first. then wipe them so they're dry. wet the sandpaper. use a circular motion in the centre of each light. then go back and forth along the edges to get in the hard spots. do this with the 600 and 2000 grade. wet the sandpaper often enough so that it stays wet. keep a cup full of water next to you and redab every once in a while. the water will become a dirty creamy yellow colour and that way you know it's working.

My lights do have some minor scratches on them but I think I'll try just the PlastX first and see what it looks like. My concern with sanding is also that the UV protection will be taken off the lens which will cause rapid yellowing.

yea in the centre of the light, then back and forth around the edges. it helps that our lights are round so you'll get a thorough sanding. cost of each sandpaper is $3-4, plastX is about $10. wax buffer $5 for pack of 3.

Ok thanks for the help guys. Is there anything better than plastx if I'm not going to sand first? I'd like to try the simplest method first.

the plastx should be sufficient enough. I rarely have to sand because I use an aggressive cutting pad with my buffer. I can finish a single headlight in under a minute. Sanding is reserved for rough surfaces where you cannot get the contaminants out by polishing.

Yups, PlastX does wonders. I just used that and a old sock to polish out my headlights. I was lazy and didn't want to bust out the Porter polisher, but it still works wonders even polishing by hand. It removed all the oxidation on the housing. Looks so much better with my new HID bulbs.
