Yea, that's the 8th gen. Keep in mind that he needs to be a very good driver in order to abstract the potential of the civic. I know most people make fun of honda civics, but these k-series responds VERY WELL to mods. When you have that with a lightweight chassis, they are no joke. It'll take a little bit more than just intake and exhaust, but if you get one that has i/h/e/cams/chip, then watch out.
Just to show how potential these k-series are, there is a guy with an 8th gen coupe. He swapped in the K24 with K20 heads, i/h/e/chip, and he's putting down 240whp, which is the same as our GS4s. The K24 in the accord only puts down about 140whp.

Dont under-estimate the right honda..my brother has a k swapped del sol that has surprised many cars out there and will probably beat my gs in a straight line. I have raced the car at the track and it not only feels faster, but with bolt ons and on street tires its doin 13's. But then again not every honda is modded correctly.

On my old weak-sauce NA-T setup. A Civic SI managed to keep next to me until 60mph. I guess he couldn't hang with a turbo once I got into the longer 3rd gear lol. Not to mention my transmission used to slip like crazy heh. Those things are definately quick off the line. But now, those pesky hondas don't stand a hell of a chance from any speed or any gear...unless they're boosted lol
Back on topic. I think in either case, it will be a drivers race. The two cars are pretty evenly matched power wise. That only applies to the later year 540i's. I think BMW reworked some stuff in the engine to make a bit more power. The earlier year of that same generation 5 series had a less output v8..."I think". Please correct me if I'm wrong.

um, i raced an 03-04 540 6spd with 3 guys in it and i was alone in my car..
and its a gs400..i have srt chip/intake and full 2.5'' exhaust..
and i was in 2nd gear around 4.5 rpm and we went at it, im telling you, that thing is fast in 6spd..
with 3 people in the car he took me about a fender and change,
if he was alone it would have been more, and if i was stock it would have been easy 1-1.5 car..
and gs400 is faster than gs430 to begin with so there you go bmw all the way..
forget the 280hp, it puts way more power to the rear wheels than gs.. in auto or 6spd..
and oh, i drove my friends brand new 03 M5(900miles on it) before he crashed it and got the new v10, and im telling you, i didn't wanna even drive my car no more...hah
