Another question that I couldn't quite find using the search. How many keys can you program into the 01+ GS? I thought I read 8 slots. I just reprogrammed a new key for my 03 since I only had one. I assume originally 4 keys are programmed. 2 Master, Valet, and credit card key. Now I put another Master in so I believe I have 5 slots filled. I wanted to program in more keys, like another Valet or two, another credit card key, as well as maybe some spares to keep at my parents house and what not. What would happen if I filled up all the available slots? Would it just start overwriting old keys, or would additional keys no longer be accepted and a reflash to clear all key codes be needed? Just wondering. Thanks.

Great Timing...
This site cracks me up. I love how this thread pops up the week I lose my keys....
I just wanted to confirm with everyone since I just went through this process....
1) Yes the ECU replacement program is still going on. I purchased a cut master key from Sewell Lexus, and went to reprogram it at my dealer. The dealer was unable to reprogram my new master key because all I have now is my grey valet key. As stated before, you need a functional master key to activate the ecu and immoblizer to program another master key to your existing ecu.
2) My service rep searched my car to see if the ECU had been replaced before. I had my dealer order the ECU this past Monday, and I will go in next week to get it all sorted out.
3) Again as stated before, it is a smart idea to purchase a back up Master key so that you will always be able to link back to your ECU.
4) I was told that our keys are laser cut and there are only certain machines capable of doing the cut. The Lexus dealer here told me there is only two machines in the State of Colorado that can do it. And neither belong to the Lexus dealers in CO. He claims that the machine is over a Million Dollars. Who knows if this is the truth. But I would be amazed if a locksmith had a work around for cutting our keys.
Thanks for everyones info. I just wanted to share my experience...

bringing the old thread back.
I just purchased an over mileage gs430 and want to transfer the master keys from the totaled gs430 to the new over mileage gs430. Will I need to cut the key first before I transfer the electronics for it to work?
I'm a newb again. Thanks.
I'm talking to David at Lextreme for engine options right now

These are the instructions to program your key. This is instructions for a GS430 2001 car year...... If you need more help than pm me and I will provide a internet locksmith that specializes in Lexus issues. This is what Lexus does to program the keys! You probably had a rookie trying to do it and they failed. I did this for a replacement key to my SC430 and I had to do it a few times but I got it to work.Be patient and follow the instructions EXACTLY....
This is a two Phase program.... The door functions(Which I think you already got to work) and the computer to start the car.
Lexus Key and Remote Programming
Key Programming 1. Insert an already programmed master key into the ignition. Do not turn.
2. Press and release the gas pedal 5 times.
3. Press and release the brake pedal 6 times.
4. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Insert the new key you want to program into the ignition.
6. Press and release the gas pedal one time.
7. Wait 1 minute. The security light will be blinking for this one minute. When it stops blinking your key is programmed. To end programming step on brake one time.(Sometimes it takes LONGER than 1 minute,Wait it out)
NOTE: Look for your security light. This light will guide you during the programming procedure. The security light will go off at Step 1. It will remain off until Step 6. The security light will come on and start to blink after Step 6 until the key is programmed. If the security light comes on after Step 4 STOP the procedure and start over again.
If you perform this procedure too slowly your car will not go into programming mode. If you can not get your car to go into programming mode make sure you are using a master key and not a valet key. If you have a master key then you will probably need to perform this procedure more quickly.
Remote Programming 1. Close and lock all doors. Unlock and open drivers door.
2. Put key into ignition and remove. Do not turn it on.
3. Using the electric lock switch. Lock and unlock 5 times. (Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock)
4. Close and open drivers door.
5. Using the electric lock switch. Lock and unlock 5 times. (Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock)
6. Put key into ignition. Turn to "ON" , turn off and remove.
7. You will see the door locks cycle by themselves.
If the door locks do not cycle (lock and unlock) by themselves then the car isn’t in programming mode and you must start over.
8. On the remote, press and hold the LOCK and the UNLOCK button at the same time for no more than 2 seconds.
9. On the remote, press the LOCK button for no more than 1 second.
AT THIS POINT, the locks should cycle by themselves ONE time. This means the procedure was accepted.
IF the locks cycle twice it has failed.
The most common reason for programming failure is because the car didn’t receive a good signal from the remote. To fix this problem try these tips. 1) Stand outside of the car while you are performing steps 8 and 9. 2) Don’t hold the remote buttons down as long.
As long as the car is still in programming mode you can keep trying steps 8 and 9 until you complete the programming. If you wait too long and the car exits the programming mode then you must start over.
After you get the remote to program then continue on with step 10.
10. Close and open door to end programming procedure.

I recently lost one of the keys for my 2002 GS430 and bought one from a local Lexus dealer for $174 + tax for the key and cutting. The dealer wanted to charge additional $65 for programming the key.
I followed the instructions above and was able to program a new master key and remote in 5min.

So, I have been trying to program a wallet key in my 02 SC430, and the car seems to go into programming mode. Close door, master key on/off five times, door open/close five times, remove master (all in ~20 sec), then wallet key goes in (~ 5 sec) with card hanging from the key. Security light flashes, and at ~5 sec I hear a buzzing noise, and security light starts a two second repeating sequence of two flashes, one flash, then no flash. Does anyone know what that means?

1 key two cars
Does anyone know if a master key (key with remote) can be programmed to two different cars? I know some keys although they look alike actually are electronically different. I'm speaking strictly about using the same key between two cars that use the same type of key.

Also, a minor contribution to the thread, but if anybody wants to check if a key is programed as a master or valet, look at the security light when you put it in the ignition. The security light will light up for a second when a valet key is inserted, but will go out if a master is inserted.
