lexus dealership and programming key
#46
when i bought my car it came with what seems like 2 master keys. For some reason i lost one of them. The dealer is quoting 200 and 50/hour for labor for reprogramming. Is this worth the trouble? Should i just get a valet key?

The valet key isn't going to be much cheaper, but the price you got from the dealer seems high.
1) You can check your local locksmith to see if they have the capability to do this work, and if their price to do the work is cheaper than the dealer..
2) You can order a key from Sewell for example for cheaper. You can try programming it yourself, if you fail or can't get it, you can bring it to the dealer or a locksmith and hope they still charge you only $50 for the fee.
(Note, if you had some relationship or status with the dealer, like you came in earlier and spent $2000 on service, small potatoes labor stuff like this often gets waived)

I agree with Lexo98, if you already have a master key, buy another key and follow the programming instructions to create another key. I too created another key by this method after crushing first master key, Order blank transponder key online and had it gut a local key shop. Then followed instructions presented in this thread PRECISELY to create the second key.

I think it be best to just take the car in by appointment. Have them make the key and make sure the key is working properly before giving the car back. Sometimes hassle free is the way. Worth saving for.

Key Programming 1. Insert an already programmed master key into the ignition. Do not turn.
2. Press and release the gas pedal 5 times.
3. Press and release the brake pedal 6 times.
4. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Insert the new key you want to program into the ignition.
6. Press and release the gas pedal one time.
7. Wait 1 minute. The security light will be blinking for this one minute. When it stops blinking your key is programmed. To end programming step on brake one time.(Sometimes it takes LONGER than 1 minute,Wait it out)
NOTE: Look for your security light. This light will guide you during the programming procedure. The security light will go off at Step 1. It will remain off until Step 6. The security light will come on and start to blink after Step 6 until the key is programmed. If the security light comes on after Step 4 STOP the procedure and start over again.
