Question Help with diagnosis

I have a 99 GS300 with a little over 100K (with all scheduled maintenance) and have had a couple of things happen that may (or may not be related). The first thing is that I have started the car and the accelerator would not work (I would press on the pedal and it would depress but the car would not respond). I turned off the key and restarted and all was okay. This has happened a couple of times in the last couple of months.

The second thing is when driving and I release the gas pedal and begin to coast the car wants to lurch (almost feeling like a downshift) instead of just a smooth coast.

Any ideas? Right now it's just an annoyance but I would like to figure it out before it becomes a major problem.

Thanks for the help!

It sounds to me like it's your Throttle Position Sensor that's faulty. I would have imagined that would have thrown your CEL though.

Actually it did throw a CEL and I reset the ECU and it seemed to work fine after that. I guess I need to see about getting it checked.

Thanks!

Have you tried cleaning out your throttle body and mass air flow (MAF) sensor? I have a DIY for a V8 GS400 but V6 GS300 are somewhat similar in the disassembly (you'll have to figure out the intake hose system, but again, somewhat similar):

Glad I could help CL is a great resource for getting me car running in top shape, so this is just a way for me to give back. I plan to do the MAF sensor and throttle body cleaning every 2 years (when I change my air filter) to keep my car running optimally.
