Default Low Oil Level On Dipstick After Car Is Warm

Hi guys,

I did my oil change about 3 months ago..I noticed about 3 weeks ago that the oil level on the dipstick is between the "L" and "F". I never have time to check it in the morning because most of the time I'm running late and I would like to know that since the level is that low after the car has been driven if the level is even lower after it has cooled. Since it at least shows some oil in it I believe that's a good indication that nothing has been damaged, correct?

Thanks guys!

Our cars have low oil warning light, good thing for you. Check your oil first thing in the morning if possible. If not check after the car has been parked with the engine off for about an hour or two in a level surface. I think you might be about half a qt. low if that, which is normal.

An oil low light? I have seen another light that resembled an oil can, but I never knew what that light was used for. Is that the light you're talking about? Oh and one more thing, but how low will the oil be once that light turns on? I bought 2 quarts of Castrol GTX Syntec Blend 10W40 that's what I use (car has 190,000 miles) Let me know if I should buy a different weight..I would like to change my oil this weekend since it's almost due for one.

Thanks for the quick response!

We have two oil sensors on our cars. One for the pressure and one for the level.

The weight should be okay since you're approaching summer in texas. But for the cooler climates, go back to 5w-30.

Just wondering did you check on a level surface? Some people I have seen check on a slightly inclined surface lol which causes a wrong reading obviously. When you cool down how long do you let it settle? Sometimes it takes a while for the oil to make it back to the pan so might be reading low sometimes. As mentioned the weight is not the same as quantity in the oil pan. You can have whatever weight you want but the quantity different if that makes sense.
