Default HELP!!! I'm buying a GS400, but I have one question\concern...

Ok this is the situation, I test drove this 1998 gs400, I like the car but there is only one problem, I can't get the car to rev past about 5000 rpm while i'm driving. I noticed that there was a switch that said etc, pwr, snw(i think)...I pressed the switch down and a green ect pwr came on the dashboard. I stomped the gas to the floor and the tranny still kept switching at 5k, I thought this was very strange. Am I doing everything right, or am I missing something. or some switch somewhere...Any advice will be appreciated becasue I will be test driving the car once more tomorrow before I purchase it and I'd like to be able to get the car to rev past 5k before I buy it. Thanks

Steve

that could be a good thing, that means the car has never been driven hard, the gs has a ecu that adjusts to the drivers driving habits if you like to drive hard it will set itself to hit the rev. limiter at 6,250rpm's if you dont then it settels down in order to reset the ecu you have to disconect the batteries for at least 10 minutes and then connect them again and drive the car the way you want to drive it, thats how you adjust the ecu to your driving habits.

but you should get the car checked out just in case

I see......So when I go there in the morning, I'll be sure to reset the ecu and try it again and see what happens...Also, I should try it again with the etc pwr ON right? And what gear should I have the tranny in...I know it sounds like a dumb question but I'm just making sure...

Thanks again...

dandada, I think you may have some problems. Foot to floor, WOT should produce red line shift (at least the 1-2, after that you start running out of speed limits) regardless of what driving habits your ECU has learned, since your foot is transmitting your current IMMEDIATE desires. If you manually shift, will the motor goto redline??

This car needs to see a service tech before you buy.........

BTW, "power" mode merely holds a given gear longer (for better acceleration) and downshifts occur sooner for the same reason. No mysterious "power" source.

Maybe the car wasn't warmed up....
Doesn't Lexus have something that keeps it from going to redline until the engine is fully warmed up??
