DIY Help Request: Clearing 98 GS tail lights
#16
thanks guys, i love the way she looks now. also updated to newer inner tails, took out the faded inners. that emblem is also black chrome, it's just the light reflecting off of it makes it look funny.
but coco, i have a pair of l-tuned exhausts. i love them! nice and quiet, and noticeable when stepped on. i do want to get an exhaust cut out though heh.
i wish i had a spoiler like yours at times!

The exhaust looks nice man! Subtle, yet mean looking.

I love how you posted just a picture, no words.
No words necessary. Simply beautiful.
I actually have a spare set that is cleared, but the driver side tail is cracked and is no good. So technically, if I were to attempt this, I'd just have to clear the driver side tail.
Man, I gotta attempt to do this but I keep telling myself I have no time but maybe I'm just lazy.

jonny2k...you could also save yourself time and frustration and buy mine. I have done them perfectly! You could sell your stocks and for less than $100 more you can scoop mine up. So basically for $100 (net from the sale of your old ones) you can have pre-cleared red/white '98-'00 oem tails. PM me if interested!

man coco i just repainted the trunk lid, so i might regret swapping it for another ahaha but who knows how the wind will blow. and thanks for the nice comments guys!
100 bucks for cleared ones is not that bad of a deal!
hey ken, why don't you try taking apart the spare cracked clear one then? and then if it comes out well, you can try it on your originals. hey man it only takes about an hour, and then you can throw back a few beers and enjoy =)

I'm going to attempt to start this via the heat gun method this weekend and will take pictures & make notes along the way. Assuming it goes well, my goal is to document the process so that others may be able to benefit from my efforts.

I am truly a pro with the heat gun, working at a stereo shop and what not. If any of you guys want your tails done let me know and i can take care of it for you. btw I never knew this could be done on the gs's. I'll be doing mine soon and i'll show you the pics

I'm sure if you write a good DIY, it will be invaluable to this forum.
Looking forward to it!

Thanks to CL member JRiggs for posting up a detailed write up using the baking method:

I didn't get a chance to try mine yet last weekend due to family commitments but since my wife is recovering from surgery I'll be hanging around the house this weekend and will try this out!

Okay, so tonight I did the baking method suggested in the previous post by JRiggs (see above) and it came out okay for the most part. There were a couple of boo-boo's but that's why I bought an extra set of lights to play around and experiment with. It's nothing I can't live with but the next time I do it I'll know better. I took some pics right before the batteries in my camera died and I need to go buy some more so I can post the pics. In the meantime here are a couple of pointers:
1) I had to heat my oven to 200 degrees as 170 & 190 didn't seem to help much.
2) The first lens I put in for 15 minute increments starting at 170 degrees and would try to gently pry w/the screwdriver. It wasn't until leaving it in longer at 200 degrees that it loosened up. The second lens I left in for 20 minutes and started prying in a couple of areas, then put it back in for another 20 minutes and the lens came off pretty easy. Next time, I'd put it in for 1/2 hour to start with.
3) TAKE YOUR TIME when prying w/screwdriver and BE GENTLE!! Work slowly and if you hear it start to "crackle", back off and stick it back it the oven.
I'll post later this weekend w/pics after I get some batteries for the camera. Thanks again to JRiggs for the helpful tips!!
