Default powder coating bad???

well i just got me a gs300 black cherry pearl and id like to get some g35 19s. i want to get the spokes done in gold and leave the lips silver.

i heard horror stories of powdercoating method where it will weaken the alloy and the wheel will break off on the car! i dont want that to happen.

is there anyways other alternative to getting the wheels gold without spray painting or powdercoating???

Purple and gold. You must be a Lakers fan. They should be fine to be powder coated. I've seen a few sets of powdercoated G35 19's for sale before. They're forged so they're pretty strong.

i dunno what powder coating method would even cause a wheel to break...it's not going to cause your wheels to weaken and break.

taken from http://my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=353258
Got this from the my350z site. http://my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=353258

im normally too lazy to take pictures of my car, but today was a special occasion. i was driving to l.a. to pick up some sway bars and on the way back heard this clicking noise very similar to istan's cracked rim problem. i pull off to the side and right when i stop the car sinks. the rim snapped off on all of the spokes. i was way lucky it snapped after i had stopped. my rims are also powder coated. they baked off the OEM paint (500F+) before PC'ing.

WOW, I have never heard of that happening. I have most of my bike wheels powder coated, but I doubt the paint was baked off. I would not bake a wheels, I would sand blast. I think that's what they did to my bike wheels.

wow. that's some craziness...yeah wheels aren't supposed to bake off the coating. that'll cause the wheels to become brittle at 500C. sandblasting is the proper way to remove the coating...

wow that is just amazing though.

Or you can have your wheels just painted by a wheel shop instead of powder coated.

Temperature control is critical when powder coating aluminum wheels
(or anything aluminum for that matter). Higher than 400 degrees F for
longer than 30 minutes will significantly affect the temper of the aluminum.

500 degrees is WAY too much temperature.

Another issue is stripping the wheel. Don't allow anyone to "hot strip" the
old paint off of the wheels- the high temperature of this chemical stripping
process also affect the temper of the aluminum. The Kinesis centers that
broke several years ago (they were all over the 'net, and falsely identified
as HREs) were a victim of hot stripping once the truth came out.

I would not powder coat cast wheels because they can have porosity
issues and the strength is not as predictable - less margin for error.
The OE G35 19s are forged, if I recall correctly and would PROBABLY
be okay if the stripping and powder coating process is done correctly.

Besides all of that... am I the only one that thinks going to all of this
trouble to customize a stock set of wheels from a different brand of car
(with a weak fitment no less) is silly?

^^^^^well i wanted something that was OEM and still looked good at the same time. And i thought of these wheels. and i know peoples were running these wheels so i thought i would go this route. I really want the gold with the black cherry . But if anything if i do get the wheels and i like it the way it is i wont go through all that trouble

Can you even do that? The wheel is not multi-piece, can you even mask the lip and powdercoat the centers? And what's wrong with painting the wheels?
