I did a Geico or Progressive (don't remember) quote when I was looking around; there was only about $5 a month differance for me between the 300 and 400. Once I saw that and the negligeable MPG difference, there was no reason for me not to do the 400; the only real reason I see for the 300 is if you plan to boost. I've been averaging anywhere between 19.5-23.5 MPG in the first couple months I've had the 400. I don't drive real fast but I love having that power when you want it.

I would go with an older GS 1998-2000 model (not that I am biased)
Why
1) Older cars are further along the depreciation curve which means if you have to sell later on, you should lose less on the car
2) There are fewer buyers for older GS (especially those with over 100k miles) which means better pricing for you
3) These cars are really well made and will last a long time if cared for (check the service records)
I drive a 1998 GS400. The old v-8 has plenty of go and the e-shift is handy if you're in a sticky situation.
Given the gas prices, I think you could get a really nice GS 400/300 for 7k to 10K right now.

go with the 400Gs 1998-2000. You can get a real good one for your price range, insist on a cherry one infact. The 400's are hard to find...hmmm wonder why...people who own them love them! They totally kick *** when asked to and if you're a "driver" you'll ask it to. Gas milage not too bad 14-16 city only and 22-26 highway-averaging 80+ (: and they are good for 200+miles so if you find a cherry one with around 80-110 there's plenty left!

The 2ng Gen GS is going to go down in history as one of the most unique body styles as well as the most reliable cars made. I have a 99 GS300 and other than a lack of off the line power, it's about the perfect car (for me). My recommendation would be the 98-00 series GS4 for the value and saving, a 03-04 GS430 for horsepower and the peice of mind of having a newer vehicle.
