When DOES the waterpump actually go bad?

Trust me guys, it's worth just doing EVERYTHING in the area while it's all apart. If something else fails down the line somewhere you will end up paying extra to repair it. I replace pretty much every rubber seal piece on the engine when I do a 90-100k service. Just for example at a independent mechanic shop it will cost around $800 in labor to do everything at once, and $350 in parts(that's at dealer cost, shops will probably rip you a little on parts). You will spend about $1150 to do everything.
Say you cheap out and skimp on the water pump and a few seals. You can probably get away with doing the skimped job for $800. Then what happens if those seals or the water pump fails 30k miles later because you neglected to change it? You will pay the shop about $600 + the extra $200 in parts. The labor is still expensive because to get to those various seals, the timing belt has to come off again! Total you will spend in the end is $1600 for the same thing that you could of had done in the first place for $1150. I just came up with these numbers off the top of my head just as an example, but it should be pretty close to what independent shops charge to do this service.

A friend of mine that is a lexus tech said that he doesn't replace them that often. Usually they just make sure that that water pump seal isn't leaking and they let it be if everything looks fine.

no they not changed ALOT but for preventative maintenance its recommended like jeff was saying. cheaper to do it now then if it does go bad have to tear it apart AGAIN n pay labor a 2nd time....makes perfect sense thats y i did mine with my 90k maintenance

I replaced the water pump at 95k when I did the timing belt. The tech showed it to me when he took it out of the car. It was starting to leak already. It doesn't make sense not to replace it while you're in there. I think it costs around $200.
