Default Serpentine Belt...

should i buy a oem one or just the ones at the auto parts store? like autozone or pepboys...my car has a major squeak in the morning, i'll change the belt first, then start checking the bearings and pulleys

I say OEM or Goodyear. Don't go with a store brand unless you have to.

Gatorbacks are $40 around here. They're made by Goodyear. I really like the design because they resist cracking and noise better than those traditional designs.

I have 2002 GS430 and it chirps like crazy especially during morning start-ups, seems to go away after a while though. My question is what would be a reasonable amount for labor to change the belt? I mean it seems pretty straight forward and the belts are easy to access.

Labor itself takes around 10 minutes to be honest. 2 minutes if you've done it already. ANYONE can do this so you shouldn't even have to think about paying someone else to do it. Shops will charge by the book so I dont know how much it'll be.

GO Gators! The goodyear gator is the way to go. And soooo easy to install. I had never done it before and I did it all in under 10 min.

What the heck $40 for the belt?!? The autozone around my place has the GS400/430 gatorback for like $28. The 2JZ 6 cyl gatorback belt I bought for my car cost $20 or so. I actually prefer the non gatorback belt since it's quieter. The next time I change my belt I'm just going to use the standard autozone brand one which is like $12 lol. The gatorback belts have the perpendicular grooves cut into it so the car kind of sounds like you have a supercharger. I already have a turbo so I have no need for any additional sound effects. Some people like that extra little whine though

i missed out on the DIY and also was concerned about my pulley bearings so i actually paid for it to be done.

worst part is there is only 1 Lexus Dealer where i live (bought my car from them too) and it cost me $70AU (~$65USD) for the Belt and $75AU (~$70US) for 1 hours labour to do the belt (i think 1 hour is probably the minimum labour charge).

The oem serpentine belt wears out rather quickly. I don't know what rubber Toyota/Lexus uses to produce these belts but they develop hairline cracks within a year from my experience. I now use Continental's Contitech serpentine belt (same compamy that make tires). Excellent belt with a better rubber compound and construction..

1HOUR job? If you lived around here, I wouldn't even charge you a beer to do this. Look under your hood, there should be a sticker explaining how the belt goes around the pulleys. 135 is a rip off man, DIY
