Default Steering Column Squeal

The past few mornings, when I get about a block from my house, a loud squeal comes from the steering column area inside the car. The only sound I can equate it to is the sound of the creature in the movie 'Aliens' when it gets hit with the flamethrower. The squeal only happens for a second or two and then doesn't happen again the rest of the day. I used the search function but couldn't find anything relevant....anyone know what might be going on in there? It's a 2000 GS3, approx. 144k, never in an accident (original owner). Thanks in advance for any help.

I have that problem too sometimes. So one day I got off my lazy butt, and took off the column cover and sprayed wd40 on it. It definatly helped, but it's going to need some actual grease of some type on there to permanantly fix it. Who knows when i'll get to that.....
