Red face Why GS400 Does 0-60 So Much Faster Than GS300

apart from the 75HP more, the main reason is the differential ratio. THe GS400's diff is geared so it redline's 2nd at 65MPH. The GS300 is geared to 58MPH. Sucks for us GS3 owners!!!

i got the info from my lexus book, just browing though and found this interesting speed info. You 4-5 Gear shift (GS400) should come at 130-143MPH!!!

Yup, dude, I read that in our new GS manual too. There's like a 20+ MPH difference between the GS3 and the GS4/430 shifts. Damn.

Yes, but.......if your GS3 was not geared as low as it is (both trans and rear end), your overall rate of acceleration would not be as great. You'd (likely) lose more by the slower rate than you'd gain by shifting at the same speed.

While magazines choose to rate cars on "0-60" there's nothing special about 60mph. As mooretorque says, the gearing is always a trade-off of OVERALL responsiveness not just one goal (60mph).

Let's face it, the GS300 is smooth and reasonably quick given its weight, but it's no rocket. I think a Maxima, Acura TL, and maybe a BMW 530 will beat it in any race.

I know Sasha has concerns about the next GS using a V6, but the if it's 3.3 and tweaked in other ways, it's likely to be quite a bit quicker than the current car.

For gs3 owners that are concerned about speed, don;t worry and just hook up your car with tv's, 20's , bodykit etc... and you will forget about the speed because your car will look like a work of art !

Sasha,

Don't forget that the 4 liter has more torque than the 3 liter. Add that to the gearing and you have quite a bit of difference!

I just love the V8 power! I don't think I would go back to V6s or I6s. The (V8) has this sound and power that just grabbs you.

Definitely agree! I used to have nothing but GM (yuck) I4's and V6's. The I4 was a very small 1.8 liter with something like 70 foot pounds of torque. Couldn't even peel the tires. The V6 was a bit better. 3.1 liter and 3.4 liter still puts out around 185 to 200 foot pounds of torque. But then hop into the Lexus GS4 with 310 foot pounds...WOW. Add Mo's intake for 340 foot pounds...the thing feels like it can pull tree stumps!

And you're right about the sound. There's nothing like the low rumbe of a V8...it just says POWER when tromped. But a nice I6 can really sing...doesn't growl though.

I had a I-4 and a V6 loved them both but like you said I jump behind the GS4 and it was no turning back. I just don't know why American luxury don't step up and build something fast and pretty.

They're "trying" with the Northstar V8, but I've seen so many new engines on crates (for entire engine replacements) that it's not even funny. But then GM does a bass-ackwards thing and loads up that engine on a 4000+ pound car. Sounds like typical corporate thinking. Now if they dropped that engine in a small car to have a real racer...then it would be a different story.

Give me the Lexus anyday. No electrical problems, no brake problems (notorious for the W bodies) and just plain all out reliable. With the 4 liter V8 and other goodies, it's just plain awesome.
