We also have a BMW with a nav system and the one in the Lexus is far superior. The Lexus unit is faster, more accurate, and has never sent me backwards.

I love my Navi and it doesn't take me all the button presses to get something done like some are saying...perhaps mine is a slightly different version? I can change radio presets without the screen and I just let the 'auto' control the A/C and climate, although occasionally I will change the airflow, which does take a couple of presses. The one that really gripes me is doing a repeat or FF/REV on a CD...you have to do 'audio', then press the on-screen button. I'm used to my Sony C-90 where everything was there, but it's still worth it to me. I had to be in downtown Winston lately (I know some of you big city guys will laugh at me) but it not only got me in where I needed to be, it got me out with 2 button presses...pretty impressive!

Yeah I'm originally from outside Wilkesboro so I make the trek from Chapel Hill up 40 and 421 usually about once a month or so while trying to avoid the Forsyth and Yadkin radars!

im looking at this car right now and it has the navigation feature, this thread has taught me a lot that i didnt know but i know that this car is a '98 gs400 so i dont know if that is "ancient" in navi technology or not.

will this navi be more of a headache than a feature for me?

there is another gs400 on the lot without navi and its about a thousand cheaper

JMO re Nav ...

I could end up being wrong, but I believe Nav is one of those things that is coming to all cars whether you like it or not.. I think in 3 years all upscale cars will have them and it probably won't even be much of an option...In 5-7 years they'll be standard on Yugos.. for that reason alone, I'd hate to be trying to sell an upscale used car in 3 years without one.... technology keeps coming, there is no stopping it.

I could end up wrong but I bought my GS430 with Nav anyway, and for the record, I don't use it all that much.

Totally agree with you. It will be just like power windows, remote alarm/ door locks, cruise control, CD changer and the list goes on.

Oh and welcome to CL.

Looks like you are a local bay area person. Just in case you didn't know , we have our own NorCal section.

I'm organizing a meet coming up next week. Check it out: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/for...s=&forumid=138

Can you post any pics of the setup? I have the NAV in my GS and I love it. We just purchased my wife an 02 RX300 which does not have the NAV, and I am looking at using the money saved to get an iPAC with a bluetooth GPS unit. Any pics and advice on where to go to would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I only have the navigation system because I wanted the Mark Levinson system and they come as a package. I really wish Lexus would change this because I really don't use the nav system, and I don't particularly like having to punch buttons on the screen. Just my $.02.

The NAV system in our '01 LS430 needs an exorcist! I'm sure it is possessed. Two trips to the dealer, who said they had never heard of such a thing(!), eventually left us feeling that all was well...for a couple of days. The map actually showed Atlanta where Minneapolis should be! Today, it has gone south again, except it reads North...anyone else with this problem?
