I was going to have my Lexus dealership perform an engine compression test, but not for 450 bucks. No sir. The leakdown test sounds much more sensibile to me. I think that or the sniffer will be my next step. If I don't get it done by my next routine service then I'll ask the dealership to check out my valve stems seals. Damn, j_version I thought you got rid of yours. What are your symptoms and how are you dealing with your issue?

You can get a Compression tester from Autozone, Checkers or any other parts store for just a deposit to rent. Do the compression test and see which cyl(s) are low. As long as the lowest and highest are within 10, you should be fine.
Leakdown testers, I don't think they carry. Find a performance shop or something of that sort and see if they might be able to help you out with that. Also like others asked, how much oil are you burning between oil changes?

Do out the math and see how long you want to keep the car. If you're putting in 2.5 extra quarts/5000 miles, and you plan to keep the car 50,000 more miles, that's 25 quarts or maybe $50 ($100 for syn).
If you take it to a shop you're going to be paying $100+ just for them to take an initial diagnostic.
By the way, one easy trick is to try a 1 grade thicker oil to stop oil consumption.

My last change I had lost maybe half a quart. This was at 5.5K with a synthetic blend, 5w30 - my car has 105k on it.
I switched up to 10w40 as a trial, so I will let you guys know if there is more/less loss. The engine IS quieter though...
