in terms of the exhaust system being the stream, you have 2 banks in the stream.

engine being the top of the stream, first bank has 2 or 3 sensors i believe, the second one going toward the back of the vehicle is the one. Odds are, this sensor has gone bad. Just search around, i believe this problem has been covered before, you should be able to get a part number.

no, you would need part no. (denso) 234-4048

this is the part number for the sensor in the pre-cat bank that handles cylinders 4-6.

here is how your sensors go, as i clarified it for myself just now:

Bank 1: before the cat. Sensor 1 handles cyl.1-3, Sensor 2 handles cyl.4-6

Bank 2: after the cat. Sensor 1 again handles 1-3, Sensor 2 handles 4-6.

if youd like, oxygensensors.com has the denso part for 120, which is a very reasonable price:

no, you're right, that's my mistake. I'm thinking banks in terms of upstream and downstream, it's actually just as you diagrammed it, in terms of cylinder banks.

bank 1 is cyl 1-3 and bank 2 is cyl 4-6, sensor 1 is precat, sensor 2 is post cat. 234-4626 is the one you need.

I had to replace an o2 sensor TODAY on my 2002 Rav4 which only has 35k on the clock

$250 bucks including labor. O2 sensors are not covered under the Toyota/Lexus 8/80k emissions warranty..The dealer also reflashed the ECU as a result of a TSB to re-calibrate the air fuel mixture which was too rich.

I too have the same CEL code. I replaced the correct sensor, disconnected battery and the CEL came back on within a few miles. I have been driving it for a couple weeks with the CEL on and for some odd reason it went off last night, then back on today with same code. I have an appointment with Toyota to try and figure it out.

Any suggestions for me to try on my own?

Thanks!
