I'm noticing a 1-2 lag in the tranny and am thinking of swapping a used tranny into my 2000 GS300.
I called the dealership and they said that there is a different tranny for the following 2nd gen time periods:
8/97-6/98
7/98-7/99
8/99-7/00 - part number 35000-3F510
8/00-1/05 - part number 35000-3F540 (A650E)
The manufacture date on my GS is 5/00.
Will a GS tranny from any of these time periods line up and work properly in my car? Dealership said it might work, but they can't say for sure.

well the obvious answer is to get the same trans that came out of your car.
the A650E will not work in your car because your ECU is not made to handle the E-Shift function.
i would assume there was some reason they updated the tranny twice from 98-00 and never updated the trans from 01-05 (98-00 gs400), i would go with the latest model (your production date) 35000-3F510

ALL GS share the A650E. Hell, all of the Lexus automatic RWD lineup of cars from 98-05 used the A650E. I've torn down a earlier generation A650E from 98-99 and compared it to the one out of my car which is an 05. They are nearly identical inside, the only real difference is how the valve bodies are setup.

Thanks for the feedback.
Just to clarify. Since "all of the Lexus automatic RWD lineup of cars from 98-05 used the A650E," then would a 98-99 gs3 tranny work in my 2000 gs3? If I'm limited to the same year tranny, it's going to be tough finding a replacement.![Frown](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Also, JCat says a 01-05 won't work in my 2000 gs3 due to the e-shift and JeffTsai says the insides of a 98-99 trans is identical to a 05. Am I to assume that even though the insides of a 01-05 look identical, it still won't work in a 2000 due to the e-shift?

Well, you have to consider the fact that the GS400 at that same year and time had e-shift. The GS300 98-00 did not have it. Then fast foward a few years the GS430 dropped e-shift but the GS300 01-05 recieved it. In my experience they are all the same transmission besides having a different bell housing and tail housing. The actual transmission is nearly identical for all RWD Lexus from 98-05.
IMO, the transmission SHOULD work just fine. What exactly is wrong with your transmission? Is it slipping or what? I would suggest you have that transmission rebuilt instead of replacing it with another used transmission....that's only if your transmission didn't blow up and destroy all the gears inside. Once rebuilt, you will have another 10+ years life at least. If you buy a used one, it might only have a few years left on it. My transmission builder does it for around $600-700 including parts(I know him so I get a hook up heh). I'm sure if you shop around you can find someone to do it for around $1k
