Default C.E.L is on and goes off.......

I got a 2000 gs300,for the last month I've been getting a check engine light that will come on for a few days and it will go back off for a few days. I don't drive the car as much as I used too, but I am wondering what it could be since the car still runs well.
I tried to take it to the dealer but they told me to bring it in when the light is on. Of course it never comes on when I decide to take it in.

Anyone know something I can check for that might make it throw a cel?

It could be many things...
I call BS on the dealer, the code is stored.
Unless you get the codes read using a OBDII reader all we could do is guess and nothing more.

The only ways that you can ask the service writers is ...to speak to the master tech..they'll give you some advices on the opt code..Usually, the writers doesn't know a things....Any codes that pops on and off will be stored in the PGM...

The dealer will probably charge you an arm and a leg to see what the code is... you can always just go to an autozone and have it scanned for free...

Post O2's. Next time it comes on, go to autozone or what ever parts store that offers free obd2 readings.

its funny you said that because my heat shield was rattling about 4 or 5 months ago and i took it to a muffler shop and they thought that the rattle was coming from the cat, so they cut it out and looked at it , and welded it back on and said nothing was wrong with it. so they put a couple of tack welds by the heat shield and the rattle went away.

now please tell me that it was alright for them to do that?
if not... when i have it checked out , if they say its the cat, i will be pissed

It means your engine is intaking more air then fuel, the mix is lean. I would start by cleaning your maf and checking for any vacuum leaks on the intake and manifold.

I also hope they cleared the code completely so you can see if it comes back again.
