Default GS400 vs GS430 acceleration question

I know there is a huge thread about this in the stickies but it didn't answer my question.

I had a 2000 Lexus GS400. I sold it this past fall.

My #1 complaint about it was the transmission. It takes way too long to downshift and go from a roll.

I would be doing 20-30 mph and when I floored the gas pedal it took a long time (relatively speaking) to downshift and go compared to most automatics I've driven. I would say up to a full 2 seconds.

There was nothing wrong with the car. It was very fast once it started moving or if I launched from a dead stop. But the acceleration from a roll was terrible in my opinion.

Are the GS430s like this as well or better?

If not, my next car will probably be a CTS-V with a stick.

Yeah, GS430 is just as bad if not worse - there's additional delay from throttle by wire.

Thanks for the reply. The car feels like it's trying to be too smooth with the shifts. I hate it.

Definitely not a driver's car.

I was considering the GS430 because my wife wants an auto but I want something very fast with a stick.

My 430 has that noticeable delay at low speed from the throttle by wire, but I don't believe it takes up to 2 seconds to downshift under the conditions you described. I think mine takes about 3/4 or a second, maybe 1 second on a bad day. Let me go try it out again after work today and I'll post an update to confirm.

Did you ever use the E-shift in the 400? I've found that makes a big difference from a roll if you downshift to the gear you want yourself.

Its the drive by wire, get the Blitz or Toms throttle controller. Difference is like night and day.

Well its defenately not 2 seconds, but maybe 3/4 of a second, yes.

Aqua, I bought that controller, I have it sitting here for a month, havent had the time to install it, and its been freezing out so that doesn't help either.

Doesn't the controller allow the adjustment of the ratio of pedal travel to throttle rather than change response time? I thought MAF cleaning/replacement was about the only thing that could be done for responsiveness?

My GS430 has about 0.5 sec lag before reacting, which seems like an age.

Doesn't the PI torque converter upgrade take care of most of this delay?

I too heard that the PI/TC take care of that problem, also if you have some change left over the 3.76 LSD is a sweet pick up as well. Believe you 'n me i read just about all the threads on the acceleration difference between the 400 vs 430, the 400 "supposely" have better pick up due to the drive by wire setup. With the PI/TC and the 3.76lsd it will unleash the beast thats being withheld inside of the 430 engine. so if possible give those two upgrades a shot before u dump on the Gs.....

The only drawback to the 430 is the check engine light MAY come on with the TC upgrade...

I have both a GS400 and GS430... I would have to agree to the review in the "stickied" thread posted above.

i hate our transmission! Truly a slushbox....it has been the reason of my demise lately to my friends G35...seems like Im always waiting an eternity for it to change, by this time he has taken the lead!! Time for a Valvebody upgrade and TC!!!
