This last monday, my wife, who is the office mgr at an independant Porsche shop, had a cutomer come in to pick up the 2nd of two cars he had purchased. One, an '85 911 Turbo and the 2nd a matching Turbo-look. (paid cash, $120,000.00 !!!!)

Anyway, As she was speaking to him she finds out that he is a Senior Corporate V.P. at Lexus. They spoke for a while and she explainds that she is looking at a '98 GS400 but was kind of worried about the high milage, 80000, and that she would probably just settle for a 98-99 GS300 with lower mileage.

He then told her that if the 400 had been taken care of reasonably well at all, that the the 400's v8 is going to "far-outlast any '300's I6". Then he went on to say, "If you can at all swing it, GET the GS400, 80000 mi. is nothing for these engines"

So anyway, she's psyched up now...........and she's not even looking at '300's anymore.

Any comments ?

I think most engines nowadays are fine for 200K miles and even more if they are maintained properly. Especially Toyota engines, they are built strong, V8 or I6. Hope your wife likes her 400 when she gets it.

Thats a sweet story oncbrzz. I can't believe anyone would go for the 300 (used) when you could get a 400 for literally a couple hundred more. I love the power of the V8, Getting that horsepower to the ground is another story.

um, my comment for this would be like this:

i own ls400 with over with over 160k it's 1994, the car is very good, my mechanic was looking at it after i bought it and other then a tune up he couldn't come up with anything else.

on another hand i just bought gs400 '98 w/ 80k.. same story.. car is great! no complains

p.s. that ls400 is for sale if anyone is interesting $8.5k

Maybe I would consider buying a GS400 w. 80000k on it .......

because I have two teenage kid$.........

Maybe because I live 3/4 mile from the beach in So Cal and my mortgage pymt is rather LARGE.

Maybe because I don't want to sell my concours clean 911 Porsche Carrera.............

Maybe because my buddy is a Lexus dealership mgr..........

Maybe because my wife works at a Porsche shop and they have worked on Lex's ..........

And finally I would consider it if the car was clean, wasn't beat, checked out mechanically and there was a tracable service record history.

Toyota makes a sound product, we all know that, and LEXUS is as we all know, their Luxury division. It stands to reason the quality is even better.
The Lexus V.P. my wife spoke with, spoke to her very sincerily when he advised her about what to do. Hell he just laid out 120k cash. He's hoping he won't get burned in his deal. Not the other way 'round.

Come on. Not everyone can afford a new GS400. If you can, why don't you give ocnbrzz some extra money so that he can get a NEW GS430 since you think that it's stupid to buy a car with 80k miles on it. Humm... lets see 15 to 20 extra grand. Humph, I think I'd either sink that into my house, or my kids college fund.

I don't think it's whether or not to buy a car with 80K miles, I think it's more about what PRICE you can get it for.

If I could find a 98+ GS400 with 80K miles on it for $10K, I would buy one JUST as a beater (wouldn't rather own a used GS over a new Civic CX bottom-of-line-no-power-nothing-base model?). But if cost $45K...well then buying a that over a new '02 GS430 would be stupid to say the least...

I have a 98 G4 and currently with 92k and counting and it has outrun newer cars without a hickup. Miles on this type of engine is not a problem if has been serviced properly.

I agree a V8 lexus with 80k is nothing!!!Hell I have seen Lincoln Towncars with over 200k and still puffin.So it is obviuos that our GS 400 will out last any American cars engine.By the way bought mine with 58k now has 67k not one problem with it.Just oooo's and awwwwww's when they see it rollin!!!!

80k is not a high mileage car, unless Lexus isn't what you guys claim it to be. I bought my M5 with 81k. I simply could not have afforded the car when new ($58k in 1991). I love buying used cars because you get so much for your money. If you do all the right pre-purchase tests (not just one of those $50 ones but a full leakdown, compression, etc.) you have nothing to worry about. I just got an email from a friend about a 1988 M6 for sale with 150k miles for $12,500. It has had a ton of new parts just put on and looks brand new (even the light gray leather seats). That is one sweet ride for $12k. Or, you could buy a used Civic.

By the way, my Dad's '91 LS400 has 160k and is pretty much perfect. I think he needs new rear shocks but other than that there is no reason it won't hit 200k.

I think the Lexus V8 is just about indestructible. Has ANYONE EVER heard of ANY problem with the engine itself!?

However, what I'd worry about on a high mileage car is failure and replacement of mechanical and electronic bits around it. Not to mention squeaks, rattles, and creaks, and leather that looks old isn't so appealing.
