Default I just bought a 00 black on beige GS400, I need all your pros' comments

I did a search then I found a similar post on the DIY section but I am just wondering if anyone done this before and how difficult this project is. I want to convert my non nav gs to a nav gs

My car's oem cd player display is currently broken .... it lights up but I can't see anything/digits on the display at all.... don't know whats playing at all. So I guess the display is gone.

Here's my plan, I was thinking to get a 98-00 GS400 NAV screen to replace the current non nav audip unit, the Nav doesnt have to work because I know its a pain to reconnect all the computer and all the harness together in order to make the nav work. As long as the OEM screen lights up, shows the cd/am/fm info, all the climate info then I am a happy man.

The next step is to find a adapter that is similar but cheaper than the Lexus lockpick ( an adapter that will alow you to connect AUX/video/audio in to the the factory screen so you can watch dvd or hook up back up camera to it. ) So I can use the monitor for either a dvd monitor or a backup camera screen and even connected to a nav later if i have time.

Many people will ask why don't you just get a aftermarket one then you don't have to deal with all those but I just wanted the factory look so people will not break my window for it because I don't have a garage to park my GS in.

Please share any comments, let me know what will you do. By the way it has 120k miles it still drives like new to me haha

not much help here, but i believe the display lights going bad is a common issue. happened to me the 1st week i got my car. Replaced it with aftermarket headunit though. I'm pretty sure your idea wouldnt be too hard to do. Goodluck

why not just sell your factory nav computer, get a non-nav climate unit and install an AVIC D3 or similar DDIN unit with built in nav using the OE double din brackets. You could get the climate unit for around a hundred bucks and the OE brackets for about 50-60. That would be the absolute easiest way to accomplish all your goals, and allow easy scalability to whatever system goals you may come up with in the future.

If you really really want the OE look, what you're saying can be pulled off. But the part i dont understand is, if you're replacing it with the EXACT SAME piece, what will be so hard about reconnecting the factory nav? Just put the same connectors back in where they belong. I think your confusion may be coming from the discussions of non-nav to nav conversions

ohhhhhhh ok. I was under the impression that you had nav to begin with. In that case it can definitely be done. I believe VAIS makes an aux kit, check the LS430 forum and ask around in there, all those guys do that mod on their factory nav. However, i'm not positive but you may need the stock nav computer installed for it to work correctly since every function of the car is controlled through that one single interface.
