(From a commercial: it transfers power from wheel spins to the wheel it grips.)

You can't shut it off. That's just a consequence of an open differential. If you want to avoid it, get yourself a clutch-type LSD. Be prepared to pay a hefty bill though.

^^^^^^^

Also, there's a reason why LSD doesn't come stock on most cars, except on some sports cars. It can be quite dangerous on wet pavement and especially dangerous when the pavement is covered with snow or ice.

Like I said before, Lexus old TRAC stability system was so effective that it allowed for both wheels to spin virtually at the same time by alternatively applying brakes. The VSC system in the newer Lexus models is a completely and utterly useless, I don't know what they were thinking.

My gs300 with blizzacks and snow mode/lower gear selected is virtually unstoppable and behaves very civily in the snow.

To those saying snow mode only changes the gearing. I tried it and the car has way less power in snow mode than regular mode. Feels like it actually looses over 50hp.

The older Lexus TRAC system works much better. This whole drive by wire and VSC system on newer Lexus is rubbish.

I have pretty much always (30+ years) driven RWD cars. I have had old mopars, (Darts, Aspens) early 80's Celicas, a couple of Previa's, a Cressida and the GS400. Without a doubt the GS4 is the most challenging car to drive in the snow. The best is my 92 Cressida. The Cressida has a clutch type LSD and I don't think I have ever got stuck. Yes you need to be aware that with the LSD the rear can get squirrely on slick roads but as long as you ease up on the gas when the rear is slipping you will be fine. There is no TRAC or VSC or Snow Mode on the Cressida but I still feel more comfortable driving that car than the GS4. If I can find a TRD clutch LSD (at a reasonable price) for the GS4 I would definitely use it in the winter. If for nothing else it's a blast on a snow covered parking lot (drifting the easy way...)

By the way I always use four winter tires.

my first car was an 89 Cressida and I have to agree with you... in the snow that car moved like a tank and i rarely got stuck... i remember in 2000 after leaving my friends house after watching the superbowl and having 5" of snow on the ground... the car coped very well, except for the first turn i made coming off of my friend's street i didn't let off the gas and went down the street sideways... lolz...
