Default Gotta get another GS

Well I have had my G35 coupe for about a year in a half. I love the car but gas is killing me. I get about 24mpg on the highway . I do 90% highway driving and I commute about 40 miles a day 65 to 70 mph. I do have a 97 Accord I got for commuting but I hate driving it and it has been sitting for months.

So now I'm contemplating selling my coupe the accord and just get a nice car to commute in. I have about 13k saved and was looking at the 04 TSX. I like it but its slow as dirt. I then made the mistake of test driving an 03 GS430. Now I want another GS. So before I do this I have a some questions.

Is the GS good for commuting?

From searching the last huge mpg thread it looks possible to achieve 28 - 30mpg on the highway. Am I correct in my thinking?

What is better for commuting the TSX or the GS430?

Thanks

I sold my 03 G35 AT coupe for a 03 GS430. I recall averaging about 23 mpg in the G35 for each tank. My commute is about 25 miles each way, all highway, but there is some stop and go. In the GS, I get about 21 mpg on the same route. I usually travel in the 75 mph range, so that likely causes my mpg to suffer. I also have a relatively heavy foot.

I think you are kidding yourself if you think you can do better in a GS430 vs a G35. I guess its possible to get in the upper 20s on purely highway, but to achieve it you will have to keep it at 55 or 65 and be super careful about accelerating etc. Basically take all the fun out of the GS430, just to get a mile or two better per gallon.

I have a co-worker with an 04 or 05 TSX AT and he gets in the low to mid-30s on the highway. When gas was $4+ a gallon, that was exactly what I was considering. I have to have an AT with my commute, but maybe a 6 spd would inject some fun in the TSX?

Good luck with your decision.

I thought you ditched your old GS400 to seek the fun to drive quotient. G35 manual is one helluva car.. Take my GS buddy The GS is a great cruising car if that is what you seek now..

Check out these under 25k 4 door luxury cars if you seek fun to drive with good mpg..

04 Acura TL 20city/30hwy mpg
04 BMW 530i 17/26mpg
05 Audi A4 1.8T 20/29mpg

The above can all be had with manual or auto trannies..

Yeah I have driven them all. I hate the TL. I don't know why. I just didn't like it. The BMW has to be in warranty for me to consider and finally I don't like the A4's interior.

In order to get that sort of gas mileage out of the Gs you would have to be doing 60 MPH. I got 25 mpg with 5 people and luggage as well as a full system tools and spare on a 350 mile trip.

agreed on both counts. btw, i dont know why people keep quoting the huge mpg thread when the poll in there shows that most people don't get over mid-20's, and even for the replies the vast majority of owners can't seem to get up there. i've been looking at a g35 6mt coupe, and if anything, the gas mileage seems identical around town, and on the highway 2-3mpg (at least) better on the g35 than the 430 thanks to a 6th gear and slightly lower weight.

that said, if you want good gas mileage the TSX is the better choice out of these two but as the OP said, slow and not exciting to drive at all. if you can deal without rear doors, a 05-06 RSX-S would be even better on mileage and fun factor but wouldn't have nav if that's a consideration.

You're asking GS vs. TSX in a GS forum? hmmm looks like you're asking a wrong question . Gotta go with GS430 man. I have an '04 GS430. Since last April, I put in
27K miles all in DFW area.

like i said before.....if u JUST want the mileage get the Tsx. they actually not bad. i like the 3.2 and Acura is a good dependable brand. i know every1 saying cause we on a Lexus forum to go with the Lexus, but go with whats best for your cause. i do love my gs430 and wouldn't get rid of her but its gas mileage SUCKS plain and simple. hell I'm starting to eyeball that new Lexus hybrid. i heard the news about a explosion in one this morning in west Memphis (bout 20 mins from me) will keep u updated
they think it was a malfunction

That's crazy, who would've thought an asthma doctor would have enemies like that?

To comment on the topic, I've averaged about 20-23 mpg in my GS400 on 20's, depending on the mix of city/highway and how heavy my foot is. I don't think it's realistic to expect close to 30 mpg on the highway unless you get into the crazy hyper-mileage sort of stuff.

Most if not all of us on this site are enthusiasts in one way or another, and I'm willing to pay a price for a car that makes me happy when I get in and drive. You gotta decide how much that's worth to you. Are you gonna spend the next couple years wishing you had a GS430 while the depreciation on your gas saver is killing you as much as more gas?
