Default Dealership experience: Park Place Lexus, Mission Viejo

Courteous service, fair price for a 120k service and...

a totally unnecessary additional repair offered.

They wanted over $200 to replace a serpentine belt. When I passed and did it myself in 10 minutes, I couldn't find a single crack in the old belt. not one...

Color me unimpressed

Its a dealership, the service advisor is in the buisness of making money. Most Lexus owners wouldn't want to be changing their own parts. You always have the power to say no.

I'm sure he read the post just fine, werewolf. Take it easy, he's offering a differing opinion is all. As he said, many customers would prefer not to change a part themselves. If it's not your usual dealership and they don't know how long it's been since the car has had a belt change, it's an offer to ensure you don't have a problem in the near future. I know that I've changed belts for people because they weren't sure how long it had been, but at least 50K miles. While the price seems pretty steep for a 20 minute (taking your time) job, I don't think it was a malicious attempt either. As Jackson said, you can always thank them but refuse.

You're completely missing the point.

A belt without cracks doesn't need replacing so when the dealership tells me there are cracks in the belt and there aren't, it's a dirtbag move.

I know dealerships are businesses but screwing a customer over a phantom repair for 200 is crappy business and not smart long-term.

No, I understood what you said just fine. I have seen belts with no cracks/marks on them break myself on about 8 different occasions. These were belts that I personally inspected and did not think would snap, but they did. I replaced a belt on a Dodge Caravan for my parents, and not even 3 months later the belt snapped. The heat in AZ and under the hood can kill belts and show very little wear.

Since you clearly think they were being shady, why did you replace it after you inspected it? If you felt it had no marks and did not need replacing, why did you?

I did not think they were being shady so I bought a replacement belt. When I actually did the replacement, I inspected the entire belt and did not find a single crack. ..thus the shady comment and bad review.

When you tell me a belt's cracked and it's not, that is not right even if you're a car dealership.

So werewolf! did you get your belt replace?.I know where your frustration headed bro..believe me I have been there..I've work at the dealership and I seen this issue daily, but you do have a point. My thought to that is a mis-diagnosis..all you have to do is point out to the advisors and ask them why they think that the belt crack even you know it didn't. Then move on with your life....

See, but you didn't say they said it was cracked. You simply said they offered a replacement and that you refused and did it yourself.

If you had said they told you it was defective, that would have been a different story. When I read it (and obviously I was not alone on this), it sounded like they offered it as preventive maintenance. Honestly, before I would have gone to the expense and trouble of changing it, I would have inspected the belt myself and rolled it through to make sure there were no cracks/splits. In the end, it cost you what, $30 and 10 minutes? That's cheap piece of mind, so good for you.

Toyota OEM belt costs about $22-23 at cost. Personally I can change the belt out in 2-3 minutes. Any monkey that has never worked on cars should be able to do it in 10-15mins!
