Default Water in spare tire compartment

I have a 98 GS400 and Ive been getting some standing water in the spare tire area. I searched the forum and see that others have had the same issue. None of the post can pin point the problem. If anyone has had luck correcting this issue without taking to the dealership, please let me know.

Thanks

Your car is missing the 'rear body plug' that is found under the spare tire but Im not sure of the part number

Maybe the weatherstrip around your trunk is bad or your trunk doesn't close tight enough.

Both plugs are in place. Every now and then a have to pull the plugs and drain the water out. I don't think that its the water seal for the trunk because the water is only in the spare tire compartment. The rugs are not getting wet.

Thanks for the replies.

Default This is not a joke...

Get in the trunk and close it (while keeping your keys with you for easy release). Have someone you know and trust help you by spraying the car's rear end on top and bottom with you in there. You may very well find it just by climbing in when it's daytime and looking for light to show through. See light? There's your hole. Then it's just a question of fixing it.

Don't be surprised if it's on the seal around the lights or the trunk - the grooves in the trunk floor may be sending the water there quickly without getting the carpet (which has a thin plastic coating on the back to form it) wet.

Let us know what happens, I hope this helps.

My car had water w/ dirt in the navigation unit area. It didn't come from the tail lights or trunk like when washing the car. It only happens when it's raining. And the issue was an oval like plug hole was missing underneath the frame rail. So, I bought a new plug hole and problem solved.

This may have nailed it. Had the same problem with a Scion Tc my daughter owns. Water was coming in through the left rear light. Had to put some weather stripping around it and the problem was solved. You can sit in the trunk with a flash light and have someone spray the hose all over the car and look for entry points. This is how I caught the scion problem.
