Default How easy is it to access the timing belt, GS400

Hey guys I just picked up a 1999 GS400 with 140k on it. The previous owner said the timing belt was changed at 95k but does not have any record of it. I just want to check it out. What is the easiest way to get to it? I assume just take off the plastic shroud over the engine?

The timing belt is internal. You need to pull off part of the engine to get to it--no real easy way to check. Sometimes, the mechanic / dealer will put a sticker in the engine bay with the mileage / date of replacement.

The serpetine belt is external and easily accessible.

Yes. It is quite difficult to even check the timing belt. There's no real easy way. I paid $1100 for timing belt/water pump replacement and I think $900 of that was for hourly labor. Try searching for DIY timing belt. If you are mechanically inclined, you should definitely check it out because there are some members on this forum who have replaced it themselves.

From pics I've seen it looks like there are metal covers over the cam gear areas, the belt should be right behind the covers on the gears. I might check it out this weekend.
