98 GS Daytime Running Light Conversion
Has anyone tried to do some conversion in their 98 GS so that it would have a Daytime Running Lights? It seems simple as you would only need a relay and an "engine on" hot wire to connect to. Please share your thoughts. Thanks.

Daytime Running Lights are required federally in the US beginning with Year 2000 models. The 99GS when introduced already has it.
Driving with the headlights on will have the same effect as you said. I think I know that. I want the correct light assembly to light up when the engine is on. For one, it's less strain on your alternator since it requires much less power.

Ok, what's the point The point is I want the wedge light ON when the engine is ON - automatically - like the 99+.
The feds mandated that as a safety measure. In Canada, that has been the law for a decade
BTW, I like DEXTER's light, too.

Early '99 GS400 did not have daylight running lights. Most daylight running lights use reduced powered high beams. So, yes you could use a relay that would pull in when the car is started and supply power to the high beams through a high wattage resistor to cut voltage to high beam. Something like a one ohm 20 watt resistor would drop the voltage to 7.5 volts on the high beams.

Yep, like Sasha said, they are Polarg M6s. I like them a lot too, but the picture is a little deceiving; they aren't really that bright, but yes, they still look good. The garage was a little darker than outside, so the camera adjusted accordingly.
If you look at my entire post from the install, there is I a pic taken outside; it is a bit more representative of the true color and brightness.
Before and aftrer pics are included too with and true comparisons with one Polarg bulb in at the same time with an OEM bulb in teh other side.
And yeah, they, along with any other bulb you touch with your bare hands, will self destruct prematurely. *That* is also in the thread.
I think Sasha actually took pics of a bulb that had bulbed; yes, I said that correctly "the bulbing of the bulb"
whitels - Thanks

I seem to recall that Lexus offered a kit to upgrade to 'Day Time Running Lignts'. I got a mailing a few years back (I have a 1999 GS400) from my Dealer offering such a kit a for $150 installed. I suspect it was simply a wire/relay modification. So you might look into asking a Lexus dealer if they still have that kits
