Clean Your MAF
If your car has around 100K on the clock and your MAF has never been cleaned, believe me, it needs to be cleaned. This is especially true if you use a K&N air cleaner. It's a simple job, one connector and two screws, spray it with CRC MAF cleaner and put it back.
Cleaning it cured an annoying part throttle lean flat spot.

I just drove the route where the flat spots were the most pronounced. (A pretty good incline entering a freeway) What a difference cleaning the MAF made! This is going to be a regular maintenance thing for me in the future. I suspect that the fuel economy will also be improved, but I won't make that claim now.

Cleaning it is only a quick fix , as the ecu naturally cleans the sensor itself by heating up the element to break of debris.
After a certain time it needs to be replaced .

I cleaned my TB last year but decided not to try cleaning the MAF after reading all the horror stories of the car going beserk and the MAF needing to be replaced after a simple cleaning/spray. Maybe in a couple years around the 100K mark I will risk cleaning it but I did not want to risk having to spend several hundred dollars on a MAF replacement after a simple cleaning just for a little better fuel economy or slightly smoother idle. The TB cleaning seemed to smooth out the throttle very slightly and made the engine a little smoother.

You shoundn't clean your maf at all, unless its contaminated by K&N type filter. I hate these filters, and I hope that K&N gets sued out of business in the very near future for making crook products that cause problems for unsuspecting victims. Nowhere in their marketing do they warn about potential MAF problems.
Now, the good news is that it is safe to clean hotwire MAFs such as the ones that come with our GS. Also, our MAFs are relatively inexpensive - a brand new one runs for less than $150.00
However it is not the same case for older models that use Karman Vortech AFM's. You cant clean them, and a replacement costs well over a grand.
