Let an old guy like me chime in.
It was so the GS 430 would meet better emissions goals and while the GS tranny was strong it would pop a tranny solenoid or two under aggressive driving. Also more GS 300s were sold than the V-8 version and with the IS 300 coming with e-shift, it only made sense to give the GS 300 the same thing.
I much prefer e-shift on the 400 (I loved it) than the gated 430. I rarely used it.

I have driven several cars with the gated, sequential shifter, and obviously have my car with E-Shift and have to say that I much prefer a wheel-mounted shifting mechanism to one on the console area. I say this because:
1) Like I said, I drive a lot in the mountains which means several hair pins, tight curves, and a few switchbacks...doing this type of driving while having one hand on the wheel and one on the shifter can be uncomfortable and a lot of work
2) Buttons/paddles on the wheel fall more naturally into your hand
3) Less strain on your hand/arm over long periods of aggressive driving
At first I hated E-Shift because I was so used to the console shifter +/- type, but after getting used to my car it's the reverse. E Shift seems a lot easier and more natural to use, and I can keep both hands on the wheel.
Just my .02

For the people that thinks the tiptronic button's are wack, try driving one with a valve body upgrade. I'll bring a smile to your face on winding curvy roads. Heck, I'd invite you to come up to the Dragon and ride with me in my GS300. It'll either bring a grin to your face or tears will roll down on the side of your face...![Wink](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
