Where's my oil??

My 430 holds 6.5 qts, I'd assume the 400 is similar. I think 3 qts might be a bit much to lose, but 2 might be safe to say, I am thinking more like 1-1.5. Was the light red or orange? There are 2 oil lights, one to check the level, and the other is pressure. I don't think your having an oil pressure problem as there is no knocking, which <3psi would cause. I have a 92' LS4 when I was about .5 quarts low, the oil level light was on. Maybe my thinking is a bit off, but just like to get the wheels turning I guess. Lexus should do a good job of diag'ing the oil leak, it would say valve covers, upper/lower pans, do you notice any oil spots in the driveway?

it all comes down to how long you are going to keep your car for. if not that long then just keep adding oil until the engine gives out.

Alright, sorry 6.5 was too much. It's been a few thousand miles since I've done my own oil. So it's 5.5 with filter, I was off a little, I usually do about 6 qts because it's never at the full line.
As Elitistk said, there are 2 lights. There is a red light for oil when it's less then <5 psi, the second is orange that tells the operator that their oil is too low, and should be check. The reason why it's orange is because it's not like it's going to ruin your engine, if the red light is on, it will.

So after the car was parked a couple days on (more level) pavement, I checked the dipstick again before adding a quart to make it to the oil change. This time there was a tiny drip at the tip. I figured as long as the oil light was out, I'd leave it, and have the garage check it out as-is.
After the oil change was done, I asked if he found anything. He said it was a quart low (that's a BIG quart!), but didn't see any leaks, and I don't appear to be burning oil, so he figured the last oil change may've been a little short. He said to keep an eye on it.
No panic necessary of course--the car doesn't take HIS a$$ to work every day!!
Anyway, I checked the dipstick this time--I'm full now

false. our cars do have two oil lights. orange for low level (next to CEL) and the red one (low pressure). I managed to trigger both on separate occasions.

That's probably because you don't have an aux. oil cooler. I was wondering why I remember more than 6 qts. It's a hayden and it holds about .5-.75 of a qt as its for a 24,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight.
OP, hopefully you've solved your problem with a fresh oil change.
