GS300/400 Reliable for Far Distance?
hi, everyone. I've read that yes a GS300 is reliable, but does it mean it can handle long distance trips? I plan on getting a 2000-2005 GS300 and want to make sure it wont break down while on the road. I do trust toyota as my uncle has driven his 2006 camry from Los angeles to San Diego everyday for work which is about 3 hr drive. As for me... I'm planning to work somewhere far too which is about an hour and 30 minutes from home. I plan on using this as a daily driven car for at least 5 years at my new work area which is far. From your guys experience is this car reliable on far trips? Do I have to worry about the timing belt or over heating or anything like that? Its either a GS300 or a 2005 Accord.
THANKS

My GS400 has almost 200k miles on it and within the last 2 weeks I have had 2 long day trips. One 600 mile trip with just me and the iPod and another 400 mile trip this past sunday with 4 in the car and the DVDs playin. Both trips I had the AC going the entire time. When I had my GS300 I drove from DC to Southern NC about 4 times a year with no problems at all either.

I have never taken a long trip, but I let my moms, pops and sister take the ride out from 45 miles north of Chicago to Las Vegas, with a stop at my Grandma's house in Colorado.
No problems, smooth ride (my sister loves it!) and they calculated 27 to 31 mpg.
I also drive it frequently to my daughters hospital in Chicago, about a 55 mile trip one way for the last two years. No problems there either. And from doing that I was getting about 23-24 mpg.

2 years, at least 7 x 1200+ mile trips of cross country, summer, winter, spring, not a single problem from the car.
routine maintenance, and if it's long trips like mine, check all fluid levels and tire pressure etc.. the routine checks. that's all.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Lexus. Mine had 150,000 miles when I decided to let it go. The only "problem" I ever had was a CEL due to a bad O2 sensor. Other than that I just performed all the major services at Lexus and did oil changes and other small things at Toyota. They really save you a lot of money. Im looking to buy another one as soon as I can find a decent one.

A week after buying my ride i drove to Las Vegas from San Jose, Ca. AC blasting the whole way. 1000 mile round trip. been driving like crazy since so i would say yes, they are reliable.

1.5 hour drive is nothing really. We're not talking about cross country or anything like that.
I'd get the GS if you can get it substantially cheaper than the Accord. Otherwise I'd get the Accord if you indeed plan on using it for 5+ years. 1.5 hour drive is pretty far for work (about 90-100 miles?) assuming no traffic. Fuel cost will definitely add up quickly.
If you have all the money in the world, by all means get the GS

so long as your maintain your car normally, you won't have any problems with the 2GS. all you have to do is check to see if the ball joints are good. everything else is just what you have to normally do with any car. no extraordinary maintenance needed.
hold on, your uncle commutes daily from LA to SD!?!?!?!?! I'd put a bullet in my head in 2 weeks!

Nope, Don't buy one....they are terrible on long trips and break down constantly, especially when they are properly maintained. You know, all that stuff about changing your oil regularly, following the maintenance intervals in the manual and properly checking out the car before you leave on a long trip, DON'T DO IT!!!! It's all a myth just aimed at getting you to spend money.
Seriously man, really? Did you really just ask that question? I know you are new but think about what you just asked. Any car that isn't maintained is more likely to break down on a long trip, it's all about maintenance and preparing. With that said you should definitely buy the Honda Accord because unlike Lexus they don't need any maintenance at all and you can drive them one bazillion miles without ever opening the hood for anything!!! Hurry and buy the Honda before it slips away!!! It's a good thing you came on a Lexus forum to ask Lexus owners if the cars were garbage because now you know the answer is a resounding YES!!!!
