I have two JL 12W3V2's in a sealed box...each sub is sealed from the other and 1.5 cu ft. per chamber firing towards the trunk and it works great.

I prefer sealed box, takes up less space in the trunk

BIG MACK you said that sealed box's dont wear the woofer's life down, you r quote said that """There are plenty of home speakers that are sealed designs from very high end companies, and they do not have failures due to being in a sealed enclosure.""" So as im sure you already know that most home systems arent running the same wattage that cars are and that car systems are put the hell by many people. Your exactly right when you said if the box is built Correctly but lots of people dont get correct air spaced box's. Also home systems are more for sound quality like THX and what not these car systems are Thumping rap music or whatever kind of bass song after song. The life like i was talking about and you said the same thing is the voice coil. Bottom end is that I agree with you that you MUST have a correctly built box or your woofer wont do what its ment to do and if you dont have a "high end quality" woofer it wont last that long

I have a single 12w6 in a sealed box, firing up through the factory sub hole (trimmed out), its run by a JL 1000/1. The set up sounds incredible!

Tony, we're on the same page, I agree, but even a "high end quality woofer" won't mean a hill of beans if it's in a poorly constructed or ill designed box - sealed or vented. Much like you have to pay to play in the Lexus game, the same is true in quality audio. If you're going to spend the green, do it right, do it once, and enjoy. Cheers, my man!

So Really you want loud heart thumping bass go with a ported box but then you better dynamt the **** out of your trunk to eliminate the rattle. but if you hard hitting but solid bass then go with a sealed box. Oh yeah if you get a sealed box it also wears the life of the woofer down faster than a ported box. The air has nowhere to go in a sealed box so thats alot of stress on a woofer.
My box is ported into the car as described above. It is the best thing to do to get the bass out of the trunk and into the car.

I would agree with Mack. The box should be built according to what the sub will perform best in. There are some subs out there that don't do well in a vented enclosure. It is a far more critical build to get a ported box correct vs. a sealed enclosure. Seale di sjust getting airspace correct...or pretty close a vented enclosure needs sapce, port length and diameter, and even port palcement to make it accurate. Ported vs. sealed depends on the sub more than your preference.
